Dating in Prague

From a Woman’s Perspective

Czech men might be known for being notoriously cheap, unhygienic, chauvinistic, humourless and even mollycoddled mama’s boys. But these negative stereotypes certainly aren’t true in all cases, and if you’re on the lookout for a soul mate or just a one-night flirt and plan on sticking around Prague for a while, you shouldn’t rule out a Czech guy. In fact, there’s a wealth of positive aspects of getting together with a Czech; for example, their total honesty (they’ll always tell you how you look—no white lies); their lack of fear about commitment, and their thriftiness, which is, of course, a good thing if you’re the date!

Given all the diminutives in the Czech language, you can also be certain that Czech men will shower you with pet names! Moreover, Czech men are old-fashioned and tend to open doors and foot the bill when out on dates. Speed dating has recently hit Prague’s social scene, and if you’re not into the loud and flashy club circuit, it’s an alternative way to test the waters of the Czech dating pool.

From a Man’s Perspective

Czech women, dating—and possibly marriage—are hot topics in the discussion forums. You’ll hear many things—that Czech women are all looking for a husband / after your citizenship / your money… As a man, you will hear about the submissiveness of Czech women. But on the other hand, you’ll hear from Czech women who dismiss this stereotype, saying that they mainly dig guys from the West for their respectful attitudes toward women. In the big picture of things, it’s all subjective. Some women are just attracted to dating a foreigner or finding it inspiring to learn different perspectives or are tired of the local men. Some believe that every foreigner is wealthy; others believe that dating a foreigner will help them improve their second language—and some fall in love for no reason.

But before you dip a toe into the Czech dating pool, take heed: chivalry is far from dead in this part of the world. Courtesies such as taking coats and opening doors are expected. She’ll also expect you to pick up the tab. When opening doors, it is important to remember one habit which is curiously different here: upon entering a restaurant, the man always goes through the door first. Women leave first.

Tip: Learn a few Czech words—it’ll be appreciated.
