Rock & Pop

Rock and pop music has left an indelible mark on the country and on Prague in particular and it is still hugely popular to this very day. As with every other major city the different types of music performed all come with their own subheaders; there’s dance music, hip hop, indie, rock, metal, classic rock and every other genre in between.
Jazz Scene

Jazz has exerted a large amount of influence over the music of the Czech Republic, and in turn the Czech Republic exerted lots of influence over the worldwide jazz scene. In the 1930s and 1940s jazz was regularly being played in many of Prague’s establishments, but in 1948 the communist regime took control and essentially banned the performance of any kind of jazz in the country.

Prague has played host to a huge amount of different composers in its long history. Mozart visited here often, as did Haydn and Tchaikovsky, with the former even naming one of his pieces after the city. It isn’t just visitors to the city who have put Prague on the classical map though, as there are a number of composers to have been born in the country, with the most famous of these being the world renowned Dvorak.

During the 1770s and 1780s Prague was one of the jewels of Europe – a city that could rival anywhere in terms of culture and opulence. When the city was victim to a terrible fire, the rebuilding effort only enhanced the look and feel of the city, with architects from various countries all leaving their mark on the buildings and providing some of the incredible palaces, churches and gardens that can still be found today.

Prague is considered by many to one of the most romantic cities in the world, with images of streetlights reflecting brightly in the Vltava River springing instantly to mind. It was 1932 when Czech cinema went global with the release of the film ‘Ecstasy’ starring a fresh faced Hedy Lamarr bathing in the nude. During the few decades to follow, only a small number of other Czech movies, like ‘The Fabulous World of Jules Verne’ (1958) by Karel Zeman, gained any international recognition.
Kafka And Kundera – The Renown Czech Writers

Although Franz Kafka was a Prague citizen born and bred, it was only in 2004 (i.e. eighty years after he had died) that the city paid tribute to his accomplishments by building a distinctive statue in Dušní street in the Old Town district. Kafka could speak Czech fluently but German was his native language and this was the language that he decided to write in.
Getting a Taxi at Night

Getting a cab in Prague especially at night might be quite a problem as you might end up with an inflated price. Except for the routes from the airport or train station, taxis are most often taken late and after a night out, when we are, perhaps, less in the mood to discuss the route or even properly remember it.
