Experience History: A New 20th Century Memory Museum Set to Launch in Prague’s Hradčany!
The Museum of Memory of the 20th Century

This Museum is preparing to relocate to its new premises at Dům pážat on Kanovnická Street in the Hradčany district of Prague this coming autumn.
The eagerly anticipated permanent exhibition, which will delve into the significant events of 20th-century history, is slated for opening in 2026. This exhibition is designed to be interactive and captivating, with the goal of drawing in school groups and younger audiences.
Delays and Reconstruction Expenses
Renovation efforts commenced early last year to meet the requirements of the museum. Initially, it was projected that the project would finish by spring, but delays arose due to an archaeological survey, which has subsequently postponed the opening date. The entire reconstruction is estimated to cost around 70 million CZK.
Founded in 2019 by the Prague City Hall, the Museum of Memory of the 20th Century was established as a recognized institute with the core purpose of documenting and preserving the memory of the atrocities committed by totalitarian regimes in the Czech lands.
The next stage involves implementing the technological infrastructure necessary for the exhibition. A significant emphasis will be placed on interactive components, aiming to make historical education more enjoyable and accessible for younger visitors.
“We anticipate regular visits from schools. The museum will serve as an alternative educational venue, lessening the dependency on conventional classroom setups. The exhibition will provide tailored tour routes specifically designed for student groups,” expressed museum director Petr Blažek.
Replicas of Interrogation Rooms and an Upcoming Film Festival
Among the features of the exhibition will be replicas of interrogation rooms, allowing guests to gain insight into the distressing conditions faced by victims during the communist regime.
Even though the museum does not yet have a permanent site, it continues to actively host exhibitions, conferences, and various educational initiatives. One of its highlight events is the 6th annual Unyielding and Sacrificed film festival, which will occur from November 4 to 7.
