Join the Weekend Bird Day Festivities at Ostrava Zoo – Your Gateway to Weekend Fun!

The Bird Day celebrations are scheduled to occur at the Ostrava Zoo on Saturday, April 5, 2025. The day will kick off with a unique ornithological walk, guided by skilled ornithologists, Otakar Závalský and Maria Hánová. If you’re interested in joining, please meet at 9:30 am near the zoo entrance (by the flamingo area). The walk will last approximately one hour. To enhance your birdwatching experience, we suggest bringing binoculars, and if possible, identification guides and atlases. Don’t forget to wear comfortable and waterproof shoes for walking in the field.
Thanks to its natural environment and its location in the Great Ostrava Forest area, the zoo is a perfect habitat for many wild bird species. At this time of year, before the trees have sprouted leaves, birdwatching is particularly easy. During the walk, participants will also have the chance to see various types of birdhouses; over three hundred have been established within the zoo grounds in recent years. Interestingly, visitors may be surprised to learn that there are no standard birdhouses with round holes and perches at Zoo Ostrava.
Bird activities
From 11 am to 3 pm, there will be exciting bird-themed activities at the Learning Centre. Participants can enjoy listening to various bird calls, discovering different feathers and eggs, along with other engaging bird-related activities. There will also be suggestions and ideas available for how to assist birds in your garden, such as installing an appropriate birdhouse, planting berry-producing shrubs, or setting up a bird feeder.
During this event, we will also introduce the Bird of the Year 2025, which is the mountain conure.
Start of guided tours of the greenhouses
On Saturday, April 5, 2025, after the winter season, guests can eagerly anticipate guided tours of the expansive two-hectare growing greenhouses in the botanical section.
At this time, bananas are ripening, along with citrus fruits like Tahitian limes, lemons, cedratas, and pomelos. Visitors will also observe exotic spices such as cardamom and lemongrass in this lush space. Moreover, the greenhouses are adorned with stunning flowers from various species of orchids in vibrant colors. Outside, the collection of heath trees is now flourishing with blooms, and the first foamflowers are starting to blossom.
You can explore the tropics with a guide every weekend at 11:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. The meeting point will always be near the flamingo enclosure at the zoo entrance, where a guide will gather the group. These tours are included in the zoo admission price. However, since places are limited, it is essential to make reservations in advance through the reservation system.
