Additionally, visitors can admire the so-called Rembrandt’s Tulips, which are noted for their striking bicolored flowers. Admission to see the approximately fifty different varieties of cut tulips displayed in the Sala Terrena is included in the cost of the ticket for castle grounds access. The floral presentations of tulips are available to view only during guided tours. Because these tours are in high demand, we strongly advise that interested guests purchase their online tickets in advance through the National Heritage Institute’s website.

Castle tours will be available during regular hours, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on weekdays as well as on Saturdays and Sundays.

Tulip fever originated in Holland

Tulipomania, also famously called tulip fever, emerged in the Netherlands during the early 17th century due to a significant shortage of tulip bulbs. As the demand rapidly exceeded the available supply, the prices of tulips skyrocketed. Everyone wanted to profit from this market frenzy, and the allure of quick wealth enticed not only the wealthy but also regular townsfolk and farmers. Many individuals resorted to selling their personal belongings, including their homes and businesses, to gather funds for purchasing tulip bulbs.

The renowned Dutch painter Rembrandt was a master of using light and shadow, creating magical atmospheres in his artworks. He lived through a tumultuous period of tulip speculation, during which a single tulip bulb could fetch incredibly high prices. Although Rembrandt seldom painted tulips, the tulip varieties that exhibit striking combinations of red or yellow streaks are now commonly known as Rembrandt’s tulips.
