Embark on an Adventure to Jesenické Viklan in Rakovník

viklanThe Viklan is a significant point of interest for tourists visiting Jesenice in Rakovník. Historical records from nearly two hundred years ago refer to a large boulder that weighs over five tons. The stone was said to wobble until the nineteenth century, when it was displaced from its center of gravity in 1866. Fortunately, dedicated individuals managed to reposition it, allowing the six-ton rock to wobble freely until 1962. Unfortunately, vandals knocked it off its resting place once more. In response, local residents attempted again the following year to restore the boulder to its original location using a crane. However, right after a news article was published about the efforts, the stone was dropped again and has since remained just inches away from its intended spot.

viklanAfter losing its balance, the Viklan was re-stabilized by experimental archaeologist Pavel Pavel in 2014, after lying unbalanced for 50 years. Thanks to his efforts, this remarkable stone can still be carefully rocked today. To successfully interact with the stone, it is important to stand at the narrow side facing away from the path and to position your hands approximately two-thirds of the way up the lower half of the rock.

Jesenický viklan consists of a type of granite known as the press type. This coarse-grained biotic granite appears in a blue-grey hue, primarily due to the presence of minerals like quartz, mica, feldspar, and amphibole. According to local legend, it is believed to represent the frozen heart of two lovers who faced disapproval in their romance.
