During the Easter season, Litomyšl Castle welcomes visitors to explore its beautiful interiors. Beginning in April 2025, it’s open for tours featuring I., II., and III. circuits (which include the Castle associated with the Wallenstein family, the Castle linked to the Thurn Taxis, and updates since its renovations), as well as an exhibition titled Why is the Castle UNESCO? Tours generally kick off at these hours: 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, Circuit II at 11:00, 15:00, and Circuit III at 13:00 hours.
Until Easter Monday, visitors can also check out the Easter Castle Cellars, a fun spot for both kids and adults. Here, they can create painted glass Easter eggs and view unique Easter decorations for sale. The Easter Egg Decorating Workshop is designed for all ages to enjoy. Moreover, beautifully crafted glass Easter eggs made by Ozdoba CZ will be on sale in the castle cellar, along with charming glass animals like chicks, rabbits, and ducklings. A beloved highlight of this annual celebration is the Easter Tasting, suitable for both children and adults. The castle cellar will be accessible each day, until Monday, April 21., from 10:00 to 16:00.
Exploring Litomyšl Castle: The Wallenstein and Thurn Taxis Families, Recent Renovations, and the UNESCO Exhibition
What can you expect to see during the castle tours? The first tour, Castle of the Wallenstein family, guides you through the first floor of the west wing, showcasing the representative and private quarters of Count Antonín I of Wallenstein-Vartenberg and his daughter-in-law Kajetana. This includes the anteroom, audience hall, green salon, blue salon, count’s study, couple’s bedroom, reading room, billiard room, countess’s salon, guest bedroom, and coffee kitchen with maid’s quarters, along with the food preparation area. The castle was under their ownership from 1825 until 1848. The interiors were restored in 2021 to reflect their original purpose and decor, based on historical references. You’ll find original furnishings complemented by classical wall paintings from artist Dominik Dvořák. The tour wraps up with a visit to an authentic home theatre dating back to 1797 belonging to Wallenstein-Vartenberg.
The second route, Castle behind Thurn Taxis, offers a glimpse into the first floor of both the north and east wings of the castle, showcasing the guest and private areas of Prince Albert Maria Thurn-Taxis and his wife Princess Margaret of Austria. This includes their family hall, oriental salon, the prince’s bedroom and study, ladies’ salon, the princess’s study, and her bedroom. The princely couple resided here from 1885 until 1945. You’ll also see the guest suite, containing a small dining room, the emperor’s bedroom and study, the butler’s area, and the entourage’s antechamber, which hosted Emperor Franz Joseph I and Archduke Franz Ferdinand d’Este in September 1889. The owner’s mother, Princess Helena of Bavaria (nicknamed Nene), was considered by the emperor for marriage, but he eventually chose her younger sister Elisabeth (Sissi), making Helena the emperor’s sister-in-law instead. The tour concludes with a visit to the home chapel dedicated to St. Monica and St. Michael, dating back to the 18th century.
The third route, titled Recent Renovations, offers insights into selected historical interiors of the 2nd floor, which have been beautifully restored and opened to the public for the very first time. These areas date back to the era of the Count Waldstein family and include the oldest theatre hall from the 1860s, along with a guest suite (drawing room, study, bedroom with a bay window chapel) and an oratory.
A tour that answers Why is the castle UNESCO-listed? is also available for visitors to experience on their own without a guide. This is a new interactive exhibition located on the 2nd floor of the castle that explores the history and architecture of the building, highlighting its cultural and heritage significance, which led to its recognition on the UNESCO World and Cultural Heritage List in 1999. This tour can be accessed following the purchase of a ticket for any of the guided tours.
