Experience a Traditional Easter at the Kourim Museum of Folk Architecture

Easter in Kouřim is not just about the story of traditional customs celebrated during this festive period, but also involves activities like baking Yiddish treats and frying pucca, churning butter, or decorating eggs. Starting from the end of Lent and continuing until Palm Sunday (the first Sunday after Easter), the Museum of Folk Buildings in Kouřim invites you to step back in time and discover the traditions that were upheld in the Czech countryside during the pre-Easter fasting and the Easter celebrations.White Saturday on 19th April 2025 is traditionally marked by the event called “Walking with Judas” (a customary Easter procession), along with activities such as decorating Easter eggs and the spinning of the paschal thread. On Easter Day, there will be an Easter fair featuring handcrafted items and various refreshments at the open-air museum, where visitors can enjoy egg decorating, and on Sunday, 20th April 2025, the celebration will include a Easter feast, an exciting egg-rolling competition, alongside frying balls and Matěj the carver’s carousel. Don’t miss the stories surrounding Easter folk customs and a small village market.
What can you expect to see in the Museum of Folk Buildings itself? The installations in the cottage from Budč and the farmhouse from Týřovice vividly recreate the atmosphere of Lent. They particularly showcase the customs associated with each Sunday of Lent—especially Družebna, Smrtna, and Května Sundays. In the house of Krchleb and from the fast in Bradlecka Lhota, you will gain insights into the customs celebrated during Holy Week. You’ll observe a beautifully set table filled with traditional Easter dishes and discover some of the magical practices intended for ceremonial cleansing and ensuring good fortune. The installation in the House of Jílové – Kamenná introduces the Easter traditions of the German community in northern Bohemia, including the unique celebration of the Easter ride, a tradition that has been preserved only in the neighboring Upper Lusatia. The Easter exhibition in Kouřim will be available for viewing until 27th April 2025.
