Vibrant Václav Havel Mural Transforms Budějovická Metro Underpass!

A new vibrant mural depicting Václav Havel has recently enhanced the underpass of the Budějovická metro station in Prague, turning it into a homage to the former president’s core values of truth and love.

This eye-catching graffiti was brought to life by talented local artists Original Seok and Phoe, in partnership with the talented group known as Dream Colours.
The creation of this mural was commissioned by the Prague 4 district, with the objective of improving urban environments through public artwork while encouraging younger people to think deeply about the principles that Havel stood for — including freedom, democracy, and mutual respect. “We were pioneers in Prague, establishing the first legal graffiti wall back in 2012,” remarked Lucie Michková, a representative from Prague 4 who led this project. “We’ve set aside specific areas where artists can work freely without the worry of being fined. This idea eventually blossomed into a larger vision — a mural right here at Budějovická.”

The site previously showcased an old mural featuring the Prague astronomical clock and other notable city features, but it gradually became worn out and lost its charm. Michková recognized that it was time to introduce a fresh concept.

“I spent almost nine months searching Instagram for the perfect idea,” she shared. “But nothing felt right — until Original Seok contacted me with his proposal. I knew instantly this was it and granted him complete creative freedom.”

The outcome is a striking portrait of Václav Havel, illustrated with a youthful demeanor, rising from a vibrant mix of colors and textures. This piece is more than just a mural — it serves as a powerful statement.

Michková emphasized that street art has historically contributed to the cultural landscape of Prague 4. “I aim to increase the availability of legal graffiti spaces across the district,” she expressed, demonstrating her ongoing dedication to fostering accessible and legal artistic expression.

Additionally, she envisions collaborating with Dream Colours on upcoming initiatives — not only to beautify public areas but also to engage with youth who might otherwise resort to illegal tagging. “We hope to connect with young individuals who spray for the wrong reasons and guide them on how their talents can be harnessed to enhance the city instead.”
