As May approaches, it’s important for Czech shoppers to check the opening hours of stores in light of the upcoming public holidays on May 1 and May 8.

In 2025, these holidays happen on consecutive Thursdays, each providing a unique shopping experience due to the 2016 legislation that governs retail operations.

May 1, known as Labor Day, is not affected by the Act on Retail and Wholesale Sales Hours. This means that stores all over the country, regardless of their size, can choose to open. However, individual retailers might decide to modify their operating hours. Therefore, shoppers are encouraged to double-check the local store hours ahead of time, as schedules can vary widely.

Conversely, May 8, recognized as Victory Day—the day we commemorate the end of World War II—is regulated by this law. On this particular day, any store larger than 200 square meters is required to stay closed. This regulation impacts many supermarkets and large retail chains significantly.

Additionally, stores that exceed the 200-square-meter size restriction must also close on other public holidays, including New Year’s Day, Easter Monday, Christmas Day, Czech Statehood Day, and the Day of the Establishment of an Independent Czechoslovak State.

However, this law does not affect smaller shops (those under 200 square meters), along with gas stations, pharmacies, and outlets situated in airports, hospitals, and transportation hubs like train and bus stations. This ensures that essential services remain accessible to the public. While e-shops can keep their operations running, physical retail locations exceeding the 200-square-meter limit must close their doors on these public holidays.

While this regulation may limit shopping options for some consumers, it also creates opportunities for others. Smaller shops, particularly those located outside large shopping centers, usually experience a boost in foot traffic on these holidays. With their larger competitors closed, these establishments can attract new customers and enjoy an increase in sales and business activity.

Retailers are firmly reminded that any attempts to bypass the law, such as reducing the store size temporarily or operating through a service window, can result in penalties from the Czech Trade Inspection.
