Mutěnice, the Heart of the Wine Region

Festival of cellarsThe village’s geographical position, surrounded by vast wine-growing hills, justifies its title as the heart of the wine region. The vineyard areas of Mutěnice are categorized into five unique vineyard lines: Vyšicko, Mutěnská hora, Úlehle, Hraničky, and Dubňanská hora. This village boasts a proud wine-making heritage that has been passed down through generations, with nearly everyone owning their own vineyard and wine cellar. One of the remarkable features of Mutěnice is its locality that houses almost five hundred wine cellars in the section of the village known as “Búdy”.

Mutěnské Búdy is a cellar area located on the outskirts of the village near the Mutěnské vineyards. Around 600 wine-growing families manage these cellars. Here, you will encounter cellars of various ages and architectural styles. From picturesque grandparent cellars to modern facilities featuring tasting rooms, seating areas, and even accommodations, there’s a variety to explore. A common element among many Mutěn cellars is the entrance facade called “Žůdro,” along with traditional decorations featuring Slovak motifs or intricate sgraffiti designs. In shed 300, local artist Jano Köhler has embellished these structural elements. The area is beautifully characterized by floral and figurative designs on the cellars and their facades, with intriguing patterns scratched into the plaster on a reddish-brown background by folk artist Ján Lacko.
