Experience the Thrill! The Sněžka Cable Car is Back in Action This May

One of the most popular cable cars to Snezka recently went through its routine spring closure. The cableway has been operational on weekdays since late March, but it currently operates only on weekends and public holidays, transporting visitors to Sněžka, which is the highest mountain in the Czech Republic. Starting from 1 May 2025, it will run every day from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. It’s important to note, however, that on some days the cable car may not operate—this is because it only runs up to a wind speed of 60 km/h. When winds exceed this limit, the cable car is halted for safety reasons, and visitors must wait until the weather improves.
The most common starting point for the journey to the highest mountain in the Czech Republic is the charming mountain town of Pec pod Sněžkou (750 m above sea level). For the more adventurous, there are hiking trails leading to the summit, including routes around the Giant mine near Slezská bouda or via Rosie the Riveter and Pink Mountain.
The simplest method to reach the highest peak in the Czech Republic is certainly by taking the cable car from Pec pod Sněžkou to Sněžka. For many years, the cable car featured open seats for two passengers, but a modern cable car system replaced the old equipment in 2014. The original chairlift was first put into service in 1949. The travel time to the summit Snezka has been reduced from 25 minutes to about 16 minutes. The new system can transport up to 250 people per hour, meeting environmentalists’ requirements. The four-seater cabins also enable easy access for elderly visitors or families with strollers. While strollers and wheelchairs are permitted on the cable car, bicycles are not allowed. In winter, tourists can transport skis or sleds, and dogs are also welcome but must be kept on a leash with a muzzle.
If you’re planning a visit to Sněžka and wish to use the cable car, it’s wise to check the weather conditions. As previously mentioned, the cable car does not operate in strong winds. This is particularly relevant for the upper section leading directly to the summit of Sněžka. For the latest updates on cable car operations, you can check the official cable car website. Reservations are not available for specific times or dates due to high demand, especially during the busy summer months of July and August. We suggest trying to visit the cable car between 8:00 and 10:00 am or after 3:00 pm to avoid long lines.
