Discover the Enchanting Terra Felix from Frýdlant’s Castle Tower

Frýdlant Castle and Chateau provides various tour options, allowing visitors to choose between exploring the castle or the castle’s specific sections. This impressive and architecturally diverse complex, which includes a medieval castle along with a Renaissance chateau, stands as one of the key historical sites in the Czech Republic.
The sightseeing routes at Frýdlant Castle take you through the Upper Castle, the oldest part of the Frýdlant complex. The Frýdlant Castle tour offers an insightful experience through the lavishly decorated rooms and delves into the history of the last owners, the Clam-Gallas family. This comprehensive tour covers the castle’s 24 rooms across its many floors. A newly added selection route, the Castellan Wing, caters to small groups. It takes visitors through the most recent section of the grounds—the Yellow Castle—where a fully equipped 19th-century apartment can be explored. This part of the tour focuses on the first three generations of the Clam-Gallas lineage.
But that’s not all—there’s also a special circuit called Weapons, Armour, and Knights, which focuses on the castle’s armory. This tour includes a climb up the tower, which can be a bit challenging but offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains as a reward. The tower rises to a height of 49 meters from its base. The lower part of the tower contains two rooms historically used for storing valuables and also served as a prison or refuge. Visitors ascend via a spiral staircase and a set of wooden steps to reach the upper sections. The tower, known as Indika (derived from the Latin term “index,” meaning pointer), was originally flat and, according to legends, acted as a beacon along the trade route connecting Bohemia to Lusatia and Poland. The current tower roof was added in the latter half of the 16th century, while its stone structure dates back to the early Middle Ages.
Children’s Tours and Free Entry to the Courtyard
There is also a popular children’s tour designed to introduce younger visitors to life in the manor in an engaging way. On this tour, children will meet the unique pet of the daughters belonging to the last owners, stroll up the grand staircase, and explore the private quarters once occupied by the estate’s last owner. The tour culminates in the children’s room, where they’ll find toys that belonged to the children of the castle.
For those who prefer not to join a tour, they can explore the courtyard for free, which also features a café.
Frýdlant State Castle and Chateau was constructed in the mid-13th century as a defense against Tatar invasions. The castle first opened to tourists in 1801, making it the first castle museum in Central Europe. In addition to the typical displays of castle furnishings and decor, the exhibition features a collection of weaponry and smoking pipes, alongside the castle’s art collection.
