Discovering Excitement: The Liechtenstein Palace Reopens on May 8

On the 8th of May, people living in and visiting Prague can take part in a delightful tour of the Liechtenstein Palace. This traditional open day, arranged by the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic, will be held in this stunning building from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..
Visitors will be able to explore the interior of the Palace, which is now often used for conferences, important protocol events, and also as a residence for state delegations. Notably, this palace has had the honor of hosting prominent figures like King Juan Carlos of Spain and his wife Sofia, British Queen Elizabeth II, and Japanese Emperor Akihito along with Empress Michiko.
If you happen to miss the tours in May, don’t worry! The palace will open its doors for tours again on June 7 and July 5, 2025.
This Baroque structure, designed by Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, is located along the Vltava River in Kampa. Throughout history, it has been owned by various esteemed families, including the Kolovrat family, the Liechtenstein family (which gave the palace its current name), and the Odkolks. From 1940 to 1945, the palace was used as headquarters for the regional leadership of the NSDAP. During this period, the garden fence was taken down and a training ground for the Hitler Youth was constructed. Following 1945, a public park was created in Kampa, and the palace served various state institutions, including the State Building Committee and the State Planning Commission. In 1958, the palace was designated as an immovable cultural monument, and since 1978, it has been the property of the Government Office.
