Discover the Enchantment and Excitement of Czechia’s Scenic Rivers!

Vltava: The Longest River in Czechia Perfect for Romantic Cruises and Timber Rafting
The Vltava is not only the longest river in Czechia but also the most popular among visitors. Its upper reaches meander through the pristine landscapes of Šumava National Park, where access is carefully regulated. The most vibrant section lies just below the Lipno reservoir, where the waters flow reliably throughout the entire year. Adventurers can indulge in some water fun at various well-known reservoirs like Lipno and Orlík, where activities such as paddle boarding and enchanting pleasure boat cruises await. A growing trend is the Vltava River trail, which takes you from České Budějovice to where the Vltava meets the Elbe in Mělník, offering a passage into the heart of Europe. For an unforgettable experience, consider a traditional log raft ride; timber rafting boasts a rich legacy in Czechia and has been recognized by UNESCO as a form of intangible heritage.
If you are planning to navigate through the protected section of the Teplá Vltava, which stretches between Soumarský Most and the bridge at Pěkné, you will need to register in advance. This applies when the water level measures between 50 and 61 cm. Reservations can conveniently be made online at npsumava.cz by 3:00 p.m. the day before, or on site at Soumarský Most if there are still available spots. Please refrain from boating if water levels are low.
Berounka: The Perfect Family-Friendly River
With gentle currents and no rapids, the Berounka is recognized as the calmest river in Czechia. This makes it an excellent choice for families with young children or novice paddlers eager to enjoy a leisurely ride. The river flows through a stunning, densely wooded valley nestled between Pilsen and Prague, encompassing the Křivoklátsko and Rakovnicko protected nature parks. A typical cruise can span three to five days, although you have the option to tackle shorter one-day segments. Along your journey, don’t miss visiting the historic castles of Křivoklát and Karlštejn or the charming Nižbor glassworks.
Jizera and Ploučnice: An Untouched Landscape Away from Civilization
The Jizera River is celebrated as one of Czechia’s cleanest waterways. Its most picturesque section winds through the enchanting Bohemian Paradise, featuring fairy-tale castles and châteaus. Along your route, consider challenging yourself with the easy via ferratas near Semily. The Ploučnice weaves through magical meanders that seem straight out of a storybook. If you have a romantic spirit, the Ploučnice is sure to evoke the feeling of drifting far from the modern world.
Interesting fact: The Ploučnice is among the rare Czech rivers that have scarcely experienced human intervention, preserving its natural beauty with no dams or weirs in sight.
Sázava: A Rafters’ Paradise
Do you dream of a genuine Czech rafting holiday? If so, the Sázava River is your destination. Flowing through the scenic region of Posázaví, this river is flanked by quaint camps and cottage settlements, many of which are over a century old. Nearly every bend in the river reveals a charming spot to stop and savor traditional Czech cuisine. The Sázava meanders through deep valleys, forests, and ancient villages. On your adventure, be sure to take in the awe-inspiring sights, such as the magnificent Český Šternberk castle!
Ohře: Enjoy a Scenic Boat Ride through Karlovy Vary and Beyond
The Ohře River, winding through West Bohemia, offers a welcoming watercourse for those new to boating. This scenic route takes you through the renowned spa town of Karlovy Vary, past the breathtaking Svatošské skály rock formations, and the historic Loket Castle. The most favored segment for rafters extends from Loket to Klášterec nad Ohří, which can be comfortably completed in 2 to 3 days.
Elbe: Perfect for Memorable Boat Trips and Cycling Adventures
As the largest river in the country, the Elbe is ideal for relaxing pleasure cruises. We recommend embarking on a scenic journey from Ústí nad Labem to Hřensko or Litoměřice. Furthermore, the Elbe serves as a route for cruise ships traveling from Prague to Dresden. For those seeking a more challenging experience, there are rafting opportunities at Kuks or via ferratas in Děčín. If cycling appeals more to you, the Elbe Cycle Route, which is predominantly flat, extends all the way to the North Sea. Don’t miss the chance to admire the picturesque landscapes of the Central Bohemian Highlands, known as Porta Bohemica, as well as the stunning rock formations of Bohemian Switzerland!
Dyje: A Jewel in Podyjí National Park
The Dyje River stands out as one of the most visually stunning waterways in Czechia. It flows through a canyon-like valley characterized by rocky cliffs, lush forests, and untouched landscapes, all part of the Podyjí National Park in southern Moravia. A trip down the Dyje promises not only serenity and breathtaking views but also a unique opportunity to wander through wild nature, away from the chaos of city life, while encountering a diverse range of wildlife. Additionally, the river flows through renowned wine-growing regions, the remarkable Lednice Park, and the previously restricted border area adjacent to Austria. The Dyje remains navigable throughout the year, with all segments being suitable for novices and families alike.
Please be aware: Boating is forbidden from the Vranov Dam to Znojmo due to the area’s drinking water sources.
Convenient Water Fun Available in Prague
The Vlny Štvanice water sports park presents a new attraction in the heart of Prague, perfect for thrill-seekers who love surfing and white-water action! Surf enthusiasts can whip their muscles into shape right in the city without having to chase sea waves, all while enjoying stunning views of Prague Castle. Alongside river surfers’ waves, there’s also a white-water channel for kayakers and paddleboarders. Remember to book your spot well in advance to secure your place.
The Slalom Channel at Troja offers another excellent choice for city dwellers interested in water sports, featuring its own white-water channel. In June (June 27-29), this venue plays host to one of the year’s premier sporting events: the Canoe Slalom World Cup!
