Discover Písek’s Sandy Delights

Are you searching for a fun event specifically for kids and young-at-heart adults of all ages? The Kudy z Nudy portal has a fantastic suggestion for you this weekend! In Sand the summer tourist season kicks off, and the banks of the Otava River will be adorned with stunning sand sculptures once again. At Sandbox 2025, you can join in the fun too!
A few years back, a medieval stone bridge in Písek was restored, and the embankment, previously damaged by floods, gave rise to a cultural hub known as the Malt House. This place showcases multimedia exhibitions packed with delightful children’s illustrations and created the Sandbox event—a lively gathering that captures the attention of children from both nearby and far away every May. After all, where else can you view sandcastles towering several meters high, whimsical fairy tale characters, and many other extraordinary creations?
Honoring 100 Years of Recreational Invention
Every year, Sandbox invites a unique theme. The embankment at the Stone Bridge will not be without its beautiful sand sculptures this year. This time, the theme will be “freedom“, reflecting the 80th anniversary since the conclusion of World War II. The sculptures will showcase freedom in various interpretations and forms. Additionally, two exhibitions will kick off at the Malt House as part of the Sandbox festivities. A few days prior to the main event, the dual exhibition openings of The Little Prince and Bald Men, featuring the artist Eliška Podzimková, will set a joyful tone for the festival. The Friday program will include the launch of an interactive exhibition titled Playing Yourself, created in collaboration with the talented Hana Železná.
The grand opening of the Sand Sculptures gallery in Písek 2025 will occur along the banks of the Otava River on Čechova Street on Friday, May 16, at 2:00 p.m. If the weather cooperates, the sculptures will be available for the public to admire at no cost until autumn.
Sandbox 2025 – Celebrating a Century of Recreation
The Sandbox is a lively street festival designed for children and their adult companions. It primarily emphasizes a multi-generational experience. This event plays with the idea that the concept of recreation or freedom to enjoy leisure was established a century ago. Organizers aim to rediscover ways of enjoying free time from the early 20th century. The goal is to bring back memories of that joyful summer—filled with the scent of sunscreen, the sounds of children laughing, and peaceful chats by the Otava River. The journey from the Stone Bridge to the swimming area will come alive with recreational experiences and playful activities to connect local artists, residents, and visitors alike. The main venue for these activities will be the open-air swimming area along Ostrovní Street.
On Friday, May 16, traditional dragon boat races will captivate audiences, alongside concerts at the Balsam Café and the stunning sand sculptures. The events on Saturday, May 17 will include a host of activities, such as performances inspired by the early 20th century, theater performances suitable for all ages, live music, and hands-on workshops. For instance, get ready for a concert by the band Hm…, enjoy performances by Brothers in Trick, and watch the talented juggler Vojta Vrtka. The Buchty a loutky theater will also present engaging shows, along with many other entertaining acts. The City Library will add to the festivities by creating a mobile library that includes a chill-out area and creative space, along with T-dance’s dance studio and a new play area for children called Hernajs, among other delightful surprises. On Sunday, May 18, visitors can delight in half-priced admission to the Malt House for the new exhibitions, participate in author readings, join guided tours of the Baldheads exhibition, or enjoy screenings of films from Animarium and Zoom Gallery.
