Unleash Excitement at Hoslovice’s Open Day

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, visitors are welcome to enjoy the Open Day, where you can explore the entire area of the Medieval Water Mill Hoslovice completely for free. If your schedule doesn’t allow for a visit on this day, you can also come on Saturday, May 24. During this day, we will have a special program called Pentecost, which features themed crafts including bread baking and tasting, a craft fair, guided tours, a fun mill wheel ride, and interactive workshops for kids.
The oldest and best-preserved water mill in Bohemia can be found just a short distance from Strakonice. The unique area of the Hoslovice mill includes the original mill with living quarters, stables with stalls and a barn, all constructed with thatched roofs, timber framing, or a combination of brickwork. Each of the buildings is topped with reed thatch roofs, which were originally made of straw. The site also features a small pond with embankments, an orchard, and grassy meadows. The mill operates with the help of water from a small pond, delivered via vantroks. This historical site is located approximately 17 kilometers from Strakonice, which also hosts an Open Day at the Museum of Central Pootaví, where you can enjoy free entry to the exhibitions and the Rumpál Tower. Guided tours of the exhibitions will occur at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM.
Hoslovice Water Mill – Oldest and Best-Preserved in Bohemia
Nestled just 17 km from Strakonice, the Hoslovice water mill stands as the oldest and finest-preserved example of its kind in Bohemia. Powered by water diverted from a nearby pond via an embankment, its buildings—topped with traditional reed thatch—showcase classic timber and mixed-brick architecture.
