Bata’s Legacy and Iconic Film Studios in Zlín
Check out the interactive Shoe Museum located in building 14|15 of the Bata Institute in Zlín. The exhibition titled The Bata Principle: Today’s Fantasy, Tomorrow’s Reality showcases the history of Bata from its inception in 1894 to the nationalization of the Czechoslovak segment of the enterprise after World War II. Among the rare foreign footwear, don’t miss the stunning textile shoes from the Chinese imperial period or a collection of Ataman shoes purchased in 1911 by the last owner of the Buchlov estate. Other captivating displays include a collection of African sandals and shoes from India.
The newly renovated space will transport you and your kids into the imaginative world of Zlín Film Studios. Here you can animate your own short movies, learn about the studio’s history and notable figures, and even visit a professional animator’s studio creating the new series about Lojzik the pig. Recently opened features include the Tomáš Bata Memorial. This unique functionalist building is open for visits on Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends, and public holidays. The interior showcases a model of the Junkers F13 aircraft, which was the tragic site of Tomáš Bata’s death. In 1932, the plane crashed shortly after take-off from nearby Otrokovice during a planned work trip to Möhlin, Switzerland.
