The Scenic Paths Surrounding Macha Lake Make For Lovely Strolls
Bezděz Castle was a favored retreat of Charles IV. In 1366, he, along with his purgrave Oldřich Tista of Libštejn, created the Great Pond, which was later named Mácha’s Lake in honor of the renowned poet Karel Hynek Mácha. Over the centuries, different noble families, including the Vartenbergs and the Lords of Dubá and Lipá, along with Albrecht von Wallenstein, came to own the castle. The Montserrat Benedictine monastery was established on-site in 1661, although it was closed down due to Emperor Joseph II’s reforms in 1785…
If you’re visiting Lake Mácha, take some time before your castle hike to explore the stunning nearby landscape. You can discover unique rock formations, beautiful romantic rock ravines, and serene spots like the Braniborska Cave or the Břehyně Pond. The rich literary heritage of Karel Hynek Mácha is echoed in the scenery, especially at Jarmila’s Rock in Staré Splavy from his famous work He hasj. The Swamp Nature Trail is dedicated to the Swamp National Natural Landmark located around the lake’s shore, showcasing protected and endangered wildlife, plants, and the area’s fishery. Visitors can also enjoy a lovely boat ride, available in May and June through reservations made online or by phone.
