Twelve Hidden Gems to Explore Before Peak Season

Planning a trip is something we all understand: you pick a date, gather all the information you can. (For the best tips, be sure to check the website Where to go out of boredom!) Then, off you go. Yet, while waiting in line at the ticket booth, you often find yourself wondering, why did so many others choose this day for their adventure too? What are the busiest times?
Data from major hiking trails show that Krkonoše National Park is the top choice, especially at the peak of Sněžka. Each summer, over a million visitors take the trek (often using the cable car). From there, many proceed through the Giant’s Hole, passing by the historic Kovárna mine. If you’re hoping for a more peaceful experience, visit in the spring—just remember that Saturday tends to be the busiest day, and you may still encounter a bit of snow in May. The cable car runs daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, but its operating hours can vary with the weather.
Similar tips apply to other popular trails like the Treetop Trail at Lipno, Janské Lázně, and the A Trail in the Clouds near Dolní Morava, as well as the Wallachian Trail in the Beskydy Mountains. They are open every day throughout the year, so make the most of it before busy season hits! Also, keep an eye on the weather—no one enjoys pedaling in rain and wind, but sunny days often mean long lines and busy paths, resulting in a much less enjoyable outing.
Looking for something small…
…that’s charming but not crowded? Consider checking out the small Josef Váchal Museum, known as the Portmoneum in the beautiful town of Litomyšl. Unlike ordinary museums, this one features a unique approach, as the artist painted not only the walls but also the furniture inside. Plus, you can visit the castle nearby, which offers new tour routes called “News after reconstruction” and an exhibition titled “Why the castle is UNESCO.” If you happen to arrive before the tourist season fully kicks off, enjoy a stroll around Litomyšl; it’s just a quick walk from the artistically painted house to the lovely Monastery Gardens.
Where to find castles, palaces, and stunning views?
Our advice also goes for visiting castles and palaces; you might have to wait for a tour, especially at popular locations. If you’d like to explore the interiors of the castle and chateau in Český Krumlov or the Lednice castle without a long wait, it’s best to visit now. You’ll have a higher chance of a shorter wait if you go on weekdays, and you can enjoy a leisurely walk in the castle gardens while you wait.
Český Krumlov officially opens for the season on April 1, 2025. The first and second route through the castle, the Castle Theatre, and the Castle Museum along with the Castle Tower will be accessible. From July 1 to August 31, the Stables and Saddlery will also be open, offering a pleasant alternative for returning visitors or those who prefer not to be amidst the crowds.
The picturesque rock town in Adršpach often sees huge crowds. However, if you visit before the high season, you can enjoy a quieter experience. Starting April 1, a new booking system requires visitors to buy tickets and parking online for a specific date and time. The management of Adršpach hopes this will help distribute visitor traffic more evenly throughout the day and reduce congestion. From April to October, the rocks are open to the public every day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Admission fees are 200 CZK for adults, 170 CZK for children, and a family ticket costs 580 CZK. If you want to avoid crowds, the best times to visit are early in the morning before 10 AM or in the early evening after 4 PM. In early summer, you can enjoy the long evenings, making an afternoon visit ideal to explore Adršpach or Teplice Rocks without the hustle of tourists.
Did you miss going outside too?
Getting into the renowned interiors of the Villa Tugendhat in Brno, a UNESCO site, is nearly impossible without prior booking. Make sure to plan your visit well in advance. Tours run from March to December every day except Mondays at 10, 11, 12, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 PM. Similarly, the Prague Müller Villa is open by appointment only but is currently under renovation. Exploring less known but interesting villas like Arnold’s Villa and Villa Löw-Beer in Brno, or Winternitz Villa by Adolf Loos in Smíchov and Bílek’s Villa near Chotkovy Sadovy in Prague offers a delightful experience.
The area surrounding the upper reservoir of the Dlouhé Stráně Pumped Storage Power Plant provides stunning views and enriching experiences, and you won’t be jostling through crowds of tourists. However, do keep in mind that using the chairlift from the Kouty area can be challenging if you’re traveling with small children or someone less mobile. The 4.5-kilometer journey from Medvědí Hora, starting from the top cable car station to the reservoir isn’t necessarily a hike, as there’s a minibus shuttle available, though it can fill up quickly. Again, it’s ideal to visit on weekdays. Guided tours of Dlouhé Stráně are available twice daily from May to the end of October—typically at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Tours that include the lower reservoir start on the hour, with a maximum of 8 tours available daily throughout the year.
