Planetarium Prague Unveils a Stunning Transformation: No More Dull Moments!

In April 2023, the Prague Planetarium closed its doors for a while. This closure was due to a substantial reconstruction and an upgrade of the projection system. The planetarium’s dome has been completely refreshed, and it will be ready to welcome visitors again on the weekend of June 14 and 15, 2025. For the first time, guests will get to enjoy a display of the universe on the new dome, which features 45 million LEDs. This special weekend will also include an exciting program. The Planetarium has organized a unique 15-minute presentation that will run almost continuously. It will showcase the best of the updated technology at just a third of the usual admission price, and guests will even receive a small token as a souvenir. Starting from Monday, June 16, 2025, the Planetarium will return to its regular operations.After the renovation, the Prague Planetarium is now the most advanced in the world. It boasts revolutionary projection technology, offering stunning visuals that were previously thought impossible. The new LED system creates images using millions of diodes. This innovation results in extraordinary contrast, clarity, and brightness. Currently, only two locations in the U.S. can match this level of contrast and resolution. Additionally, it is perfect for 3D projections. The visual experience at the Prague planetarium in Stromovka has surpassed even IMAX standards. Ticket prices for a screening are comparable to regular cinemas: 290 CZK for adults and 220 CZK for children.

What’s the plan for tonight? Movies, theater, or the planetarium?

The Planetarium Prague will provide a broad variety of experiences, ranging from licensed shows to innovative new films. Visitors can look forward to, for instance, a puppet film featuring Spejbl and Hurvínek, a documentary about dinosaurs, or the next episode of the beloved series 3-2-1 Start!. Plans for the future also include concerts, theatrical performances, and various cultural events. Additionally, there will be rocket launches, and the ambitious director of the Prague Planetarium, Jakub Rozehnal, dreams of a live feed from the International Space Station.

However, beware, as the visuals in the dome are so realistic that they might make some sensitive viewers feel queasy. When the stars shine and the sky seems to whirl around you in the Planetarium, you could feel dizzy—it might feel like your body is spinning. There are bags available in the hall for anyone who might need them, just like on an airplane…

The old exhibits are gone from the foyer

The foyer of the Planetarium Prague has seen significant renovations. The previous exhibits have been removed, and the displays have been relocated to the Technical Museum in Liberec. A key new feature is a digital wall surrounding the entire area. This high-resolution screen can display anything. When you enter, you will discover an exhibition of astrophotographs by Martin Myslivec, whose images remind viewers of those captured by the Hubble Telescope. There are also interactive displays and scenic projections.

The Prague Planetarium in Stromovka first opened in 1960 and is recognized as one of the 50 largest in Europe. It provides programs for the general public as well as for schools. Astronomy enthusiasts can join various courses and clubs. The Observatory and Planetarium of the City of Prague also comprises the Štefánik Observatory in Petřín, which opened in 1928, as well as the observatory in Ďáblice from the 1950s.
