Discover the Enchantment of Solitary Forests

Hájenka na Březníku was established in 1856 as a forestry guardhouse for the noble Schwarzenberg estate. This charming building is tucked away in the thick woods of the Sumava Mountains, close to the border with Bavaria. Its fame comes largely from the writer Karel Klostermann, who visited the area in 1890 and later captured the essence of Březník in his writings, particularly in his novel From the World of Forest Solitudes.
After 1948, the area was designated as a restricted border zone and slowly fell into neglect. However, following the changes in 1989, it experienced a revival—undergoing restoration—and now functions as an information center, Karel Klostermann Museum, and refreshment stop for visitors exploring the Šumava National Park. Thanks to its scenic location in the lovely Luzen valley, the hájenka is regarded as one of the most stunning and exceptional locations in Sumava, attracting thousands of tourists each year who seek peace, nature, and the charm of days gone by. Exposition From the world of forest solitudes
In June 2025, a new exhibition opened in Hájenka called From the world of forest solitudes, which pays tribute to Karel Klostermann’s well-known and still-loved works. This exhibition offers visitors a glimpse into life in Březník during the 19th century, a time when the inhabitants faced tough living conditions heavily shaped by the weather. What was daily life like in this remote area over a hundred years ago, where it took a two-hour walk to reach the nearest town of Modrava?
The exhibition presents the history of the area, tracing it from the earliest records to today. It connects with global history, which, even in this secluded setting, had bearing on other significant historical events. The highlight of the second part of the exhibition is a model representing Březník in the latter half of the 19th century. This model, created by Mr. Stanislav Vrška, was made with the help of historian Petr Klučina, who delved into old documents to find the most exact information. It showcases the entire settlement, featuring the stone hunting lodge, the original wooden cabin, the wooden houses of lumberjacks, and farm structures. The mood is enhanced by informational panels containing brief texts, illustrations from Karel Klostermann’s novels, historical photographs, and the natural sounds of the Šumava region.
The information center and refreshment area are also operational in the hájenka. It welcomes visitors daily from May through October, weather permitting.
