Discover Excitement: Jihlava Zoo Introduces Three New Male Nubian Giraffes!
Zoos play a vital role in conserving different species today. A male reticulated giraffe named Paul left Jihlava Zoo in early July 2025 to join some females at Safari Park Dvůr Králové. However, the giraffe exhibit at Jihlava Zoo didn’t remain vacant for long. Soon, three male Nubian giraffes arrived from various Czech zoos.
The first one to come to Jihlava was a seven-year-old male from Ostrava Zoo, originally born at Poznan Zoo. Over the next few days, additional males from Zoo Liberec, and another male from Safari Park Dvůr Králové—who will turn two years old in August—joined him. Now, with this third male’s arrival, the giraffe group at Jihlava has been completed.
The three young males are slowly getting to know each other, which requires a lot of patience and time. The giraffe pavilion can be closed off when necessary, but the giraffes will still have access to an outdoor yard where visitors are welcome to observe them. Gradually, they will also start to use the outdoor enclosure. Jihlava Zoo is committed to supporting the breeding of Nubian giraffes and provides a special opportunity for visitors to see the lives of these graceful creatures that roam the African savannahs.
These males might eventually serve as breeding individuals in other zoos, helping to maintain the genetic diversity of the population in human care. Keeping a separate group of male giraffes at Jihlava Zoo is crucial for the entire European breeding program. This setup helps manage animal movements across zoos based on genetic recommendations and plans. The newly formed undergraduate group of young males is also significant; it allows them to grow, gain experience, and train with one another before they are sent to breeding herds in other zoos as adult males.
This summer, visitors will find plenty to enjoy at Zoo Jihlava, including guided animal feeding. Come see how meerkats, rhinos, llamas, bears, lemurs, and South American tapirs are fed. There are also Family evening tours.
