Unveiling the Enigma: Houska Castle Prepares to Host the Thrilling Bohnice na Housce Event

On Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy a delightful visit to Houska Castle featuring music, showcases of traditional crafts, fun games, the unique atmosphere of the castle, and much more.
This year, there will also be special activities for children and even younger kids. Surprise, this marks the 22nd edition of the event known as Bohnice na Housce. Over the weekend, you will have the opportunity to craft your own ceramic item using a potter’s wheel, paint designs on fabric items (like bags and toys), weave a basket out of wicker, create a stained-glass piece using the Tiffany method, and so much more. The event will also feature presentations from the Centre for Psychosocial Services, the Centre for Psychosomatic Rehabilitation and Therapy – including Hippotherapy and Zootherapy, the PNB Volunteer Centre, Bona, o.p.s, the Columbus Prague Society, and the Kosmonosy Psychiatric Hospital.
The castle, well-hidden from curious eyes, lies secluded in the woods near the village of Blatce, less than 10 kilometers from Doksy. This Gothic castle, which has undergone Renaissance restoration, is steeped in many stories and legends. A lot of these tales are connected to the nearby Bezděz Castle, thought to have been constructed around the same time as Houska. Since the two castles are in close view of one another, it was said that whatever happens at Bezděz, the lords at Houska know about it and vice versa. According to various legends, there exist points in both castles from which one can hear what is going on in the other.
However, the enchanting aura of mystery surrounding Houska is enhanced by another legend. Because the castle is located in a rather isolated area and is mostly concealed by trees, it was rumored to guard something dangerous hidden within its walls. Could it be true that the builders sealed a gateway to hell beneath the castle chapel? You will need to uncover this for yourself on the castle tour. Don’t forget to also visit Hell!
