Kašperk Castle Sparks to Life with Enchanting Theatre and Night Tours

Kašperk CastleAn iconic landmark, standing tall in the forests on Ždánov Hill, is the Kašperk Castle, which at 886 meters above sea level, is the highest royal castle in Bohemia. It was constructed in 1356 by Charles IV. to safeguard gold deposits and the Golden Trail that connected Passau to Kašperské Hory, as well as to protect the border with Bavaria.

The castle’s courtyard is free to enter, and visitors can explore the castle itself through guided tours suitable for both kids and adults. The classic tour shares the castle’s Gothic history, from Charles IV’s time to its later developments. You’ll get to see many preserved architectural features, and afterward, you’ll climb up to the west tower. You can also visit the top of the east tower with a guide as part of a separate unguided tour. After navigating the steep stairs, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of central Šumava and the faraway Czech countryside. For children, there’s a unique one-hour tour designed to teach them about the castle’s royal history in a fun and engaging manner. Tickets for this tour are only available online, and it is recommended for kids aged 6 to 11. On special days, you have the chance to join Evening tours with the castellan.

On August 21 – 23, 2025, get ready for the Night tours of Kašperk Castle. Don’t expect anything cheesy or overly spooky. These night tours are packed with mystery and enchanting tales based on ancient legends gathered by folklore collector Hans Kollibab around the Kašperské hory area in the early half of the 20th century. You’ll hear about mysterious ghosts, clever goblins, and dark forces, each with important lessons. Spaces for the tour are limited, so it’s advisable to secure your spot early! Also, keep in mind that the parking lot is a 1.5 km walk uphill from the castle.

The summer season at Kašperk is equally vibrant, filled with theatrical performances. From August 5 – 7, 2025, the Kašpar company will present the Shakespeare classic King Lear. Following that, from August 8 – 10, 2025, the comedic play The Cripple of Inishmaan will take the stage. You might wonder what happens when filmmakers travel all the way from America—on Friday, August 15, 2025, the theatre group Atakdale from Sušice will present the play Sun, hay and so on…, which is especially appealing to fans of Zdeněk Troška’s comedies.

September will start beautifully, and on Sundays, September 14, 2025, you can join the inaugural event Day with the Kašperské hory Children’s Home in Kašperk. The Autumn Days of the Šumava Triple Castle will happen on September 27 – 28, 2025, focusing on the time passage in the lives of medieval people. It will showcase the daily rhythm, seasonal cycles, and lifestyle in the 14th and 15th centuries. This event is organized together with the castles of Rabí, Velhartice, and Kašperk.
