60 Years Since the Neanderthal Jawbone Find in Kůlna

The Sloupsko-Sošov Caves are the largest caves that anyone can explore in the Czech Republic. They make up an extensive system of domes, passageways, and large underground pits that link two levels below ground with a difference in height of 60 metres.

Among the discoveries, there are Neanderthal bones and stone tools that are as old as 130,000 years. Other items from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages were also uncovered at the cave’s entrance. The shed used to be a separate cave, but during World War II, it was damaged as the Nazis tried to turn it into a factory for making aircraft engines. In the 1990s, it was linked to the Sloupsko-Sošůvské Caves through a tunnel, and at the end of the tour, visitors emerge to the surface. Before that point, they can explore the exhibit titled Caves and People.

Starting in 2025, the Czech Cave Administration will also provide an option for a separate tour of the Kůlna exposition, so guests don’t have to go through a longer or shorter tour of the Sloupsko-Sošůvské Caves.

Not too long ago, the information panels along the nature trail from the Shed to the parking lot underwent renovation and were updated. For many years, this trail has facilitated the return to the parking area after tours, enhancing the earlier guides’ explanations. These information boards also include details about the so-called Props, the popular climbing rocks named Hřebenáč, and another two rocks close to the entrance and ticket office.

The Sloupsko-Sošov Caves first opened their doors in 1881 and were among the very first in the world to be lit up with electricity.

Every year, from March to November, they welcome visitors to an 1800-metre long tour circuit, which is the longest of the 14 caves in the country, or its shorter 900-metre alternative. Additionally, you can now join the Minitour to the beautiful Elisha’s Hall and the immediate area surrounding it. With prior arrangements, guests can also embark on the experiential route called In the footsteps of Nagel in the cave’s lower levels. Participants must be at least 10 years old and should be prepared to climb down a 12-metre ladder or navigate a 10-metre ferrata route. From December to February, there are also popular winter flashlight tours in the Šošův area.
