Bezděz Castle Transformed into a Swordsmen’s Arena This Weekend – Your Ultimate Escape from Boredom!
During the summer, Bezděz Castle hosts a variety of exciting events. One of the highlights will be the weekend of 2 and 3 August 2025, featuring a fencing show called War of the Roses and Wallenstein’s death put on by the Bibus Spiritus fencing theatre group. You can enjoy the thrilling battles and duels inspired by these historical events at 11:00, 13:00, and 15:00 hours. The performance will also include a mystery story to uncover the murderer lurking within the shadowy alleys…
You will get to witness the story of Edward of York, who faced many challenges after England’s defeat in France and the subsequent fight for the throne between the Yorks and the Lancastrians, an era known as the War of the Roses. This narrative will also reflect on the Czech meadows and groves with the tale of Albrecht Václav Eusebius of Wallenstein, who was the commander-in-chief of the Imperial forces, Duke of Frýdlant, and Prince of the Empire, as well as Governor-General over regions accompanying the Baltic and Ocean Sea… He built up a vast fortune, surpassing even the emperor’s wealth. He was never defeated in battle, only succumbing to the jealousy of his own allies and the fear he inspired in the Emperor himself.
Entrance to Bezděz Castle costs 180 CZK for adults and 50 CZK for children between the ages of 6 and 17. Beyond the scheduled events, you can explore the ancient castle itself, which features informative texts and a layout plan of the site. The tour will take you through the castle’s Chapel, Royal Palace, Purkrab Palace, and Manx Palace. The exceptional early Gothic chapel showcases a double gallery supported by two sections of cross vaults. In the castle’s second courtyard, the newly opened Templar Palace displays archaeological discoveries from its vaults, along with a medieval model of the castle and instruments used for torture. The group Bibus Spiritus consists of fencers, amateur theater performers, dancers, riders, and history enthusiasts, all sharing a deep affection for Czech castle architecture and a strong desire to occasionally immerse themselves in a space marked by the essence of bygone eras.
