Czechia’s Tourism Boom: Welcoming Back International Visitors!

Metropolis Leads, Regions Strengthen
Prague remains the top destination in Czechia, welcoming over 2.2 million visitors in the second quarter—accounting for more than a third of all arrivals. The South Moravian (625,000) and South Bohemian (494,000) regions follow closely behind, thanks to their cultural events, wine tourism, and natural beauty. Notably, the Karlovy Vary Region boasts the longest average stay at 4.67 days, reflecting its spa-centered appeal. Shorter stays are typical in the South Moravian Region (2.88 days) and Prague (3.27 days), where many tourists come for long weekends.
Since 2012, there’s been steady growth in visitor numbers and overnight stays across the Czech Republic, interrupted only by the pandemic. Visitor figures have rebounded rapidly, not just in Prague but also in spa and vacation regions. Traditionally, most foreign visitors come from neighboring countries; however, tourists from Asia and the Middle East are increasingly discovering lesser-known domestic gems, including spa towns. Guests from Kazakhstan, Israel, and Saudi Arabia tend to stay the longest, while European visitors typically have shorter trips.
Year-on-Year Growth and Year-on-Year Jumpers
Compared to the same period in 2024, arrivals have increased by 5.6%, and overnight stays rose by 6.9%. Notably, overnight stays grew faster among foreign visitors (+8.8%) than among residents (+5.3%). The most notable percentage increases among foreign markets were seen from Ireland (+33.6%), Argentina (+28.6%), and Japan (+23.4%). Countries like Turkey, Greece, and Israel also showed significant growth compared to 2019.
“The second quarter confirms that Czechia attracts tourists throughout the year and across all regions. Both domestic and international guest arrivals and overnight stays are on the rise. While traditional neighboring markets remain strong, we’re witnessing significant growth from more distant places such as Ireland, Argentina, and Japan. Compared to 2019, many markets are significantly outperforming previous numbers. Lesser-known regions are gaining traction, and the length of stay for international visitors is gradually increasing again. Our focus is to maintain this positive trend, extend stays, and encourage higher tourist spending. Currently, the most popular countries are Germany, the USA, the UK, and Italy, while we are also targeting markets like China, Canada, and Arab states,” says František Reismüller, director of the Czech Tourist Authority – CzechTourism.
Regional Differences and Length of Stay
The Ustecky and Olomouc regions recorded the highest year-on-year growth in guest numbers. The Karlovy Vary Region took the lead in average overnight stays with 4.67 days, which is over a day longer than the national average. In contrast, the South Moravian Region and Vysočina reported shorter stays.
Outlook
These positive results from the second quarter build on growth seen earlier in the year.
“From January to June, nearly 10.5 million visitors came to Czechia, spending more than 25.6 million nights in the country. If this trend continues, 2025 could be one of the most successful years in the last decade. With increasing interest from distant markets, the return of Asian tourists, and steady domestic demand, we have a strong foundation for further tourism development nationwide,” adds František Reismüller.
Hotels as a Popular Choice of Stay
Hotels remained the leading accommodation choice in Q2 2025, with 4.4 million guests, representing 70% of all visitors. This marks a 4.1% improvement from last year, with domestic guests up by 3.7% and international guests rising by 4.4%. Over half of hotel guests (2.5 million) were from abroad. Overnight stays in this category increased by 6.1% year-on-year, totaling 10 million nights—4 million of which were Czechs and 6 million were foreigners. Guesthouses also reported stable interest with a 5.6% growth in guest numbers and overnight stays. Campsites saw the fastest growth, with 6.8% more guests and an impressive 11.5% increase in overnight stays year-on-year.
