Brewery Zubr in Přerov

Why is there a bison in the brewery’s emblem?
The city of Přerov and the Zubr brewery both feature the family crest of the Lords of Pernštejn in their logos. The history of beer brewing in Přerov goes back to the 13th century, with the town receiving its brewing rights back in the Middle Ages. A major development occurred in 1480 when William of Pernštejn established a manorial brewery in Přerov. This is why the emblem of the town and the brewery includes a bison head adorned with a golden mushroom in its nose. The current tradition continued with a joint-stock brewery alongside a malt house, established in 1872, with the first batch produced shortly after.
Zubr beer in a new style: new logo, TV spot and Oktagon MMA
In 2025, Zubr brewery set out to make a significant change to its visual identity. A new logo, packaging, and cohesive design were developed in partnership with Cocoon Agency, reflecting strength, pride, and integrity. “This isn’t just a minor facelift; it’s a reflection of the new energy and direction Zubr is embracing,” explains Tomas Valenta, the brand manager for Zubr brands.

The transformation also includes a new TV campaign titled Awaken the Bison in you, created by OAK agency. The production blended traditional filming methods with 3D modeling to vividly animate the powerful creature. In the commercials, Zubr is portrayed as a hero capable of overcoming any challenges.
This new brand energy is also making its mark in the sports world. Zubr has teamed up with Oktagon MMA as an official partner, showcasing its logo at the largest mixed martial arts events in the Czech Republic. The debut took place in Prague’s Eden, with other events like the August Gala in Štvanice and the December finals at the O2 Arena in Prague featuring limited edition Zubr Grand Oktagon beer with a design by Cocoon, along with fan zones and VIP areas for hundreds of attendees.
The beers that make up the Zubr family
The “bison family” is primarily represented by the Classic and Gold light beers, each offering a distinct character while maintaining the same level of drinkability: the Classic serves as a smooth companion for extended evenings, while the Gold has a sharper taste that invites you to have another sip. The lager family includes Zubr Premium and Zubr Grand; the former boasts a perfect balance of maltiness and bitterness, while the latter presents a richer body and a notably lingering bitterness that stays on your palate.

Above these is Zubr Gradus, a pale lager crafted with various Czech hops and a mix of classic and specialty malts. This beer beautifully balances elegance and strength. The permanent selection is also joined by seasonal specials and non-alcoholic beers for times when you want to enjoy a drink without the alcohol content but still desire great flavor.
Who owns the Zubr brewery?
The Zubr brewery is not owned by the Lords of Pernštejn or the town of Přerov. Instead, the traditional brewery brands Zubr, Holba, and Litovel are owned by Kofola. The Renaissance nobleman William of Pernštejn would surely be happy to know that the brewery in Přerov remains successful more than 500 years later, and that beers from Zubr have consistently earned awards in the annual Czech Beer tasting competition.
Events and excursions at the Zubr brewery
Zubr enjoys showcasing itself right where it all happens. Guided tours of the brewing facility, distillery, and lager cellars last about an hour and often include yeast beer tasting directly in the lager cellar. It’s a moment that reminds everyone that Patience is indeed the fourth key ingredient in Czech lager.
You can head straight to Přerov for some beer! Each year, Zubr organizes several traditional events at the brewery, such as the Birthday of Zubr Brewery and Zubrfest. Visitors can look forward to a wide variety of excellent beers served at numerous taps throughout the brewery, a full entertainment program, contests, free brewery tours, and plenty of other enjoyable activities. Zubr is also available at Přerov’s town festivals, Žatec Dočesná, and various beer-related events.

While most of the beer brewed is enjoyed locally, the bison head also travels to other countries, including Slovakia, the Scandinavian nations, and even Vietnam. Annually, around 280 thousand hectoliters are produced, allowing the beer time to mature and develop in a traditional manner. Zubr is truly a beer that stays authentic. It embodies the spirit of Haná, the value of hard work, and the necessary time for proper beer aging, all while bravely adapting to modern tastes. It demonstrates that strength doesn’t always need to shout to be impactful and that good lager reaches its peak when it respects its craftsmanship.
