Branice Theatre Marks a Century of Entertainment!

The Branice Theatre was founded in 1925 using funds from its own sources (the theatre raised around one million Czechoslovak crowns through public collections). It was built to meet the cultural needs of the residents of braník district in Prague. Throughout its history, the theatre has featured many well-known drama actors, directors, mimes, and musicians from both the Czech and Slovak regions and across Europe. After the Second World War, the building was repurposed as a furniture storage space for schools that had been vacated. Starting in 1963, it became part of the District Cultural House of Prague 4 and was utilized by Czechoslovak Television.

In particular, the theatre is well-known for its pantomime. Its golden age occurred when Boris Hybner showcased his Mim Session, while Jiří Turek, the founder and director of the widely acclaimed Letní Letná festival, served as the theatre’s director. Today, Branický Theatre is part of the new circus movement. The celebrated Czech acrobatic group, Losers Cirque Company, performs here regularly. The theatre has been renamed Divadlo Bravo! and continues to deliver outstanding acrobatics, along with maintaining the traditions of pantomime and movement theatre.

Jubilee season with iconic shows

The Losers Cirque Company is excited to start the theatre’s 100th season, along with the sixth season of the Opening Ceremony, taking place on September 21, 2025, at 15:00 right outside the theatre along Branická Street. Attendees can enjoy additional activities that are part of the program, which will conclude with the highly popular performance The Losers. Besides this opening, the theatre has several new productions planned, showcasing both works from the local “Losers” group and visiting performances.

The original show that first debuted in Braník in 1982 was hosted by Boris Hybner and was famously titled Mim Session. The theatre has updated this classic and, with a few respectful changes, it will return in 2021 under the title Thumbnails. This show will typically feature in the program at least twice every season. This year, Bravo! will host it on October 7, 2025. Other shows that will be performed include The Unbound, The Stranger, Sausages in Honey, Tribes, Audition, National Collection of Bad Habits, Creation of the World, and Hey, Master.
