Země živitelka Draws Breeders Back to České Budějovice
The Land of the Breadwinner takes place this year at the Exhibition Grounds in České Budějovice and is the largest agrosalon in the Czech Republic. This event isn’t limited to just one sector but covers all areas of agriculture. Each agricultural branch has its own pavilion and special activities. This year highlights include agricultural machinery and various services, crop and livestock production, technology, forest and water management, organic farming, as well as showcases for hunters, fishermen, beekeepers, and small breeders, with each niche represented throughout the entire venue, complete with their own pavilions and unique programs.
Agricultural technology takes up the largest portion of the exhibition space at the Land of the Breadwinner. An engaging program is held outside and inside pavilions D1, D2, and D5. Livestock can be found in mobile pens and boxes, while pavilion T1 is dedicated to high-quality Czech food, which visitors can sample and buy at lower prices. Various professional organizations, state institutions, and agricultural companies are also part of the exhibition.
Dexter cattle and the world’s largest donkey
For animal enthusiasts and farmers, the Land of the Breadwinner has plenty to offer
with many fascinating exhibits. On Saturday, you can experience the Dexter Show, which is a competition for one of the smallest cattle breeds. Dexter cattle are the smallest in all of Europe. For the first time in the Czech Republic, you will also see the Karachay horse from the Caucasus, a mountain riding breed, along with a rare pair of Poitou donkeys. These donkeys are the largest domestic breed and can actually be taller than some horses, reaching up to 170 cm and weighing over 350 kg! The Sheep and Goat Breeders Association, the South Bohemian Union of Horse Breeders (JSCHK), and the National Stud Farm Kladruby nad Labem will also be exhibiting.
At the Land of the Breadwinner event, visitors can enjoy the popular contest on Friday, August 22, 2025, called Shepherdess Speed Shear – Sheep Speed Shear. On Sunday, the traditional Sheep Day will take place featuring the national zwartbles breed championship. Additional activities include demonstrations of wool processing, cheese making, and working with sheepdogs. Old Cladruban horses, which have been bred for over 400 years, will be showcased in the forecourt, along with training demonstrations. There will also be goat milking shows. Expect to see full representatives of original Czech breeds that are included in the national gene reserves of the Czech Republic.
Among these breeds are the Preštice black-footed pig, a breed of cattle called Czech Worm, Czech Spotted Cattle, Šumava sheep, and Wallachian Sheep. The Moravian Silver Nutria, Preštice Multicolored Nutria, Standard nutria Czech type, white Czech goats, brown short-haired goats, and more are also part of the exhibition, including Old Cladrubian horses and Hucul horses. Additionally, the poultry section features the Czech golden-spotted hen and the Czech goose, included in the Czech Republic’s genetic reserve. Among the rabbits, you’ll find the Czech starling, Czech lurcher, Czech albino, Czech red, Czech black-footed, Moravian blue, and Moravian white brown-eyed types. The list even includes various kinds of fish like common carp, rainbow trout, brook trout, tench, catfish, small sturgeons, vendace, whitefish, and common whitefish. Beekeepers will also be showcasing our bee honey bees.
A new era – modern agriculture
In addition to livestock, visitors at the Land of the Breadwinner will be able to see new farming technologies and what’s called Smart Farming, which has its own outdoor space featuring a special podium and display areas for exhibitors. This year, the focus will be on topics like AI technologies in agriculture and food processing, autonomous machines, drones, and subsidy policies. Usually, there are some exhibits making their debut at the Land of the Breadwinner. This year, for example, the Roboton Farmer agricultural robot is designed to cut down on the need for human workers, while also reducing the use of chemicals and fossil fuels. Another interesting product is glass fertilizer, engineered to release phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in a controlled manner for up to three years. Also, after many years, visitors will get to see tools in the hunting section, featuring a brand new rifle from Czech Armoury.
The Golden Cob Competition and the National Harvest Festival
The competition for the best exhibit, known as Golden Cob, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, has become an important part of the Land of the Breadwinner event. The entries in this competition are the leading products and innovations in the areas of technology and mechanization in agriculture, as well as Science and Research in farming and food production. The jury presents prizes such as Golden Ears with a flower to exhibits that contribute significantly to environmental protection. Food items are evaluated based on their exceptional quality and standards.
National Harvest Festival, a celebratory ending to the harvest season, will be traditionally held on Saturday. A harvest parade will take place, led by high-ranking state officials, featuring people in traditional costumes with harvest wreaths, majorettes, live music, hunters with birds of prey, hunting dogs, and horses with riders. The opening ceremony for the National Harvest Festival occurs in the Brewery Garden.
The world of agriculture for children
For the 8th year in a row, the agrosalon Země živitelka features a special area called Children’s Agricultural World, where young visitors can experience being little farmers through activities like drying hay, even pretending to care for it to keep it dry at night. Kids can engage in ploughing the field, play in a wooden cowshed, and compete for great toys. There are also plenty of fun activities in the exhibitors’ sections, including bouncy castles, trampolines, and aquazorbing. Children can enjoy pedal tractors and wooden harvester models, ride on horse replicas, and learn about the forest through educational activities, plus demonstrations of predatory animals, and a children’s zoo. They can also take part in creative workshops, face painting, and many other engaging activities. The South Bohemia Agricultural Museum displays Historical tractors, veterinary equipment, mechanization tools, and gardening gear. Children will be thrilled with a ride in 1:3 scale mini versions of historical Tatra vehicles, and, of course, see a significant number of animals including cows, numerous horses, pigs, and tiny piglets, among others.
