HDressing a knight in armourLandstejn was constructed in the early 13th century, likely by the Moravian Přemyslids, serving as a fortified structure in the region where Bohemia, Moravia, and Austria meet. With its design featuring two towers linked by a central palace, it represents a unique complex of this type in Bohemia and stands as one of three surviving Romanesque castles in the Czech Republic, as well as one of the most significant Romanesque monuments in Central Europe. It is located at the edge of dense forests, positioned on a hill above the village of Pomezí pod Landštejnem, which is 9 km from Nová Bystřice.

Throughout history, the castle has had several notable owners: the highest Prague purgrave Charles IV. Vilém of Landštejn; in 1381, the castle became part of Václav IV’s possessions and was later passed on to Konrad Krajíř of Krajk. In the 16th century, the Krajíř family expanded the castle buildings and enhanced the fortifications. In 1846, Landštejn was inherited by Baron Ferdinand Sternbach from Count Herberstein. His family managed it until 1945.
