Join the Excitement of This Year’s Bat Night at Ostrava Zoo
The Ostrava Zoo is going to host an event called “bat night” in partnership with the Czech Society for the Protection of Bats, which promotes the protection of bats throughout the Czech Republic. This event is set for Wednesday 3 September 2025 and will happen at the Zoo Ostrava Education Centre from 18:00 to 22:00. It will focus on bats, which are the only mammals capable of sustained flight. Attendees will have the opportunity to gain insights into the latest research and conservation efforts regarding bats and, importantly, discover fascinating details about their lives—including how these unique flying mammals live, the various threats they face, ways to protect them, and why they are vital to our ecosystem.
The techniques used in bat research will be showcased, and there will also be several live bats present. If the weather is nice, the event will conclude with a guided walk through the zoo in the evening, using an ultrasound detector to monitor these fascinating animals. The evening will be hosted by zoologist Martin Gajdošík from the Silesian Museum in Opava, who has been a dedicated member of the Czech Society for the Protection of Bats (ČESON) for many years.
Over the years, attendees have even had the chance to see live bats from rescue breeding programs, which they could feed and release afterwards. The Zoological Garden and Botanical Park Ostrava is home to nearly one third of all bat species found in the Czech Republic. For children, there will be bat-themed crafts and other fun and educational activities offered during the lectures taking place from 18:00 to 19:30.
