Lectures and Special Tours

Český Krumlov TourThe fascinating history of Český Krumlov will be brought to life during the European Heritage Days throughout the town’s streets and gardens. On Saturday, September 6, beginning at 5:00 p.m., take part in an educational walk titled In the Footsteps of the Gates and Fortifications of Český Krumlov with guide Martin Jakab. Historically, Český Krumlov had nine city gates; however, only the Budějovická gate still stands, while the others were lost during the 19th century. The journey starts in Svornost’ Square and moves to the remnants of the medieval walls located in Hradební Street, towards the bastion beside the brewery, and ends at the Budějovická Gate, where the guide will illustrate the original designs compared to how they look today.
You can also look forward to another intriguing discussion on Wednesday, September 10, at the library, where Lubomír Šmrha will take you into the history of the glassmaking village of Lenora. This lecture about the origins of Lenora will be accompanied by an exhibition of Lenore glass from Mr. Šmrha’s private collection, along with a projection of historical images from the studios of Josef and František Seidel. This will provide a remarkable chance to compare historical photographs with rare, delicate pieces of art.
Nicolas WintonNow, let’s fast forward over 100 years from the tales of Šumava to the story of Nicholas Winton, who organized the rescue missions for Jewish children from Bohemia. Journalist Judita Matyášová will unveil the journey of 80 Czech Jewish teenagers who found shelter with foster families in Scandinavia. They will share their investigative journeys to reconnect with forgotten Jewish histories on Friday, September 12, at 4:30 p.m. in the synagogue. In addition to the testimony from these so-called Winton children, the story of the Krumlov Jewish family known as the Breuer family will also be presented. Their direct descendant – American graphic designer and artist Noah Breuer, will reflect on his ancestors’ experiences through the exhibition The Return. Alongside this discussion, a collection of artworks inspired by samples from the family’s textile factory will be displayed in the synagogue.
Following this talk, you can head to Port 1560, where at 8:30 p.m., there will be a night tour of the former widow’s mansion of Anna of Rogendorf, mother of the last Rosenbergs. The guide Pavla Benettová will lead you through the mansion’s mysterious hallways and chambers while dressed in historical attire.
The weekend of September 13-14 will be dedicated to guided tours of the castle garden, during which Jiří Olšan will share its history – on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., and on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Since the 1840s, this beautiful garden has been home to a collection of rare trees that were planted by Princess Eleonora of Liechtenstein. Many of these trees remain today and represent a dendrological rarity. Jiří Olšan particularly enjoys the view of the garden from the České Budějovice side, where the distinctive red-leaved beeches can be seen from afar, giving the garden its unique charm and reminding visitors of its exotic beauty.
