The Battle of Chlumec, Prestanov and Varvaz: A Notable Bloodshed of the War

Anniversary of the Battle of ChlumecOn Saturday, September 6, 2025, there will be a traditional reenactment of the Napoleonic Battle of 1813 near the village of Chlumec na Ústecku. This event marks 212 years since the coalition armies of Austria, Russia, and Prussia achieved victory over Napoleon’s army, led by General Vandamme.

This commemorative event, complete with a diverse program, takes place on the first Saturday in September. It includes a military camp, a photo booth, an art exhibition, a children’s fairy tale show, a march of troops, and a memorial ceremony at the chapel in Stradov. Battle demonstrations will occur in the meadow behind Hot. The nearby villages of Petrovice, Tisá, Telnice, and Velké Chvojno will also host various related activities. Attendees can expect a period military camp, troop marches, and exciting skirmishes and battles.

Historical records indicate that during August 29-30, 1813, the significant event known as the “War of Wars” occurred around Chlumec, Přestanov, Stradov, Žandov, and Telnice. This Napoleonic battle in Bohemia was one of the bloodiest confrontations of that period, engulfing around 130,000 soldiers from four different armies. The outcome resulted in over 20,000 casualties among French, Russian, Austrian, and Prussian soldiers, leading to a major defeat for General Vandamme’s forces.
