Discover Pilsen’s Historic Underground by Torchlight
Pilsen Historical Underground spans an impressive 13 km and is among the largest underground systems in the nation. It has been open to visitors for 40 years following meticulous archaeological digs and careful restoration that revealed centuries of history going back to the city’s founding. You can enter this underground area from the original 15th-century law-war house located on Veleslavín Street, which now features a unique Brewery Museum. In the past, these underground spaces were primarily used for brewing beer, storing food, and even served as a defense mechanism during turbulent times.
During your tour, thanks to the exhibits and artifacts on display, you’ll get a glimpse into the history of the town and the daily life of Pilsen’s medieval residents, as well as learn about how the underground was developed from the 13th century onwards. The Brewery Museum is also an attraction worth your time. For adult visitors, there’s a special treat—a tour featuring the so-called beer bottle, which can be traded in certain Pilsner restaurants for a glass of Pilsner Urquell lager (0.3 l). Inside the Brewery Museum, you can also find Pivotéka, a bar boasting nearly 140 different beers from over 25 Czech microbreweries—ranging from lagers and ALE, IPA, stouts, sours, to barrel-aged beers made with various spirits.
Tickets for a special torchlight tour of the Underground can be purchased online; tickets for adults are 200 CZK, while seniors and juniors can get in for 150 CZK.
