Future Gate Festival: A Magnet for Sci-Fi Icons and AI Innovators

The Future Gate festival will kick off with a Ukrainian chamber drama titled You Are the Universe, directed by Pavlo Ostrikov. This film tells the story of the last human alive in the universe. Julie Ducournau, known for her work in body horror, presents her latest film featuring a teenage girl named Alpha. The remarkable Bi Gan brings audiences on a visually stunning cinematic journey in his film Resurrection, which intertwines China’s past with cinematic history. A thought-provoking piece called Obex by Albert Birney uses black and white imagery to metaphorically explore loneliness in a charming way, particularly through its relatable main character. Over a decade after *Edge of Tomorrow*, the narrative adapted from the Japanese novel *All You Need Is Kill* returns, this time as an animated film produced by Warner Bros. Lastly, an Estonian-Finnish comedy titled Black Hole guarantees laughs, featuring aliens visiting a rundown prefabricated housing complex with its share of strange incidents.
An international jury will determine the main prize winners. This jury includes director Robert Hloz known for *Point of Renewal*, designer and futuristic fashion creator Monika Vaverová, and Robert Stone, a British director and producer nominated for the Academy Award for *Radio Bikini*. Additionally, there will be an Audience Choice Award based on votes from moviegoers.

Film classics and documentaries not only about the human body

In the classic film section of the Future Gate festival, audiences will view films that have notably shaped the science fiction genre. Featured is the 1986 cult classic body horror film The Fly starring Jeff Goldblum, as well as Robocop, Paul Verhoeven’s action film from 1987 that delves into the enhancement of a police officer’s body. Additionally, a newly restored version of Angel Egg by renowned Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Oshii will be shown, alongside the first three installments of the thrilling Alien series. The section will be capped off by Spielberg’s beloved family film E.T. – Alien.

The theme of the human body will be prevalent in various documentary films as well. How to train AI focuses on Google’s DeepMind lab and chronicles the life of Demis Hassabis, a leading figure in artificial intelligence. Cyborg: Documentary introduces Neil Harbisson, the first individual officially recognized as a cyborg. Roblox and Metaverse dives into the world of a popular computer game and its challenges.

Planetary Engineering is a fresh audiovisual work by the versatile filmmaker John D. Boswell. Sexbot Madness unveils the fascinating world of intelligent sex robots. Directed by Robert Stone, Starman portrays Gentry Leem, a visionary NASA engineer who collaborated with both Carl Sagan and Arthur C. Clark. The documentaries will also feature a film by Lily-Hayes Kaufman, daughter of Lloyd Kaufman, discussing the Troma phenomenon and their hit film *Toxic Avenger*, titled Troma conquers Cannes.

Future Gate 2025 invites you to explore a future where the line between human and machine is becoming increasingly blurred. Prepare for an array of films that will captivate, make you think, and perhaps even unsettle you. Our body is more than just a physical shell – it is a doorway to understanding our true selves.
