Autumn Harvests at South Bohemian Ponds Kick Off with Rožmberk Pond

Fishing in the Třeboň regionThere are over 500 ponds, with 75 of those being larger than 15 hectares, and the biggest is the Rožmberk pond, which is a major attraction for fishermen from the Třeboň area. The season kicks off with the ceremonial fishing event at Rožmberk. This year, fishing will take place from Friday to Sunday, specifically October 17-19, 2025. Each morning, the first fishing attempt will begin at 7:00 a.m., followed by activities to sort and store the catch. Typically, there will be another fishing attempt around noon, depending on conditions. You can watch the traditional fishing methods, and enjoy delicious fish dishes from a variety of culinary options available.

CatchAlong with fish soups, fish fillets, and carp fries, there will also be Třeboňská baštýřek cuttings and South Bohemian Jekra, a type of dried meat jerky, offered, as well as the chance to buy live fish from the catch. For children visiting the area, under the dam of Rožmberk pond, there will be a play area with a chance to catch fish from a fish tank and see demonstrations of various fishing tools and techniques. There will also be plenty of fish dishes available, along with beer, soft drinks, coffee, pastries, and an extra program featuring an exhibit of fish and fishing gear.

With prior arrangement, it is possible to receive expert explanations of the catch for smaller groups. Attending the pond catch will include Mr. Jakub Krčín from Jelčany and Sedlčany. Fishermen usually start early each day. Fishing typically wraps up between around 14:30 and 16:00. Refreshments will continue to be available afterward, but the duration will depend on the vendors. During the fishing event, there will be live fish sales at the dam of Rožmberk, as well as at the fishing grounds of the Třeboň Fishery, since both Sádky Třeboň and Šaloun will be open on the weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each spot will sell carp at a single price of 119 CZK/kg.

Pond fishing events beyond the Třeboň region

Engaging in catching events at smaller ponds also creates a more personal atmosphere, which can be experienced at Horusicky (October 29-31) or Courtyard (November 3-6). This year, after a two-year pause, there will also be a fishing event at Svět Pond in Třeboň (November 3-5). The tradition continues in Hluboká nad Vltavou, with alternating catches at the Blatec-Dívčice ponds (November 6) and Vlhavský (November 18). In 2025, Bezdrev, the second largest pond in the Czech Republic, will also host events from October 26 to 29. On the levee, there will be music entertainment, and the city has organized a complimentary bus service for attendees. On Friday, October 31, the National Agricultural Museum Ohrada will celebrate Fishing Day.
