Uncover the Secrets of Burk: Explore the Enigmatic Dr. Kittel’s Mansion in Pěnčín

In the Jablonec region, one cannot refer to anything else but Burk, which is unique to Kittel’s house in Pěnčín. In the 18th century, this impressive building was owned by the remarkable physician and healer Kittel, whose life is described by many tales and myths. Kittel completed this large and enigmatic mansion in 1747, which led to the first rumors suggesting that he had financed the construction of the Burke using money gained from the devil.

As noted by historian J. V. Scheybal, who studied similar buildings in Jablonec (and is honored with an educational trail in that area), Dr. Kittel established a medical facility there, which is regarded as the first mountain sanatorium. This establishment is said to have been a one-of-a-kind institution in what are now the Czech and Slovak Republics and is recognized as among the first in Central Europe.

Pharmacy, spa, rooms for patients, and skeletons

In a two-story wooden building, he had a variety of facilities including a pharmacy, rooms for patients, an autopsy room, a human skeleton room, and books. He practiced hydrotherapy even before well-known figures like Kneipp or Priessnitz and performed eye surgeries. His mansion also contained a greenhouse where he grew rare herbs, as well as a Spa. One unique feature of this restored house is the two-story black kitchen, where it is said that Kittel created various medicines and mixtures.

Visitors to the renovated ground floor can find a museum, information centre, and Kittel’s pharmacy. The first floor also houses an exhibition that showcases the life and contributions of the renowned doctor, as well as aspects of folk architecture, the history of Pěnčín, and its surroundings. In the stone-vaulted cellar, there is an exhibit focused on hydrotherapy, which Kittel developed and is considered to have preceded the better-known Vicenz Priessnitz by a hundred years. Additionally, there is an archaeological and geological exhibition.
