The Museum of the City of Prague Is Reopening Soon!
The primary building of the Museum of the City of Prague is a remarkable example of architectural beauty and is listed as a significant cultural site in the Czech Republic. It was constructed in the Neo-Renaissance style between 1896 and 1898 based on the work of architect Antonín Balšánek, specifically for the Museum of the Royal Capital of Prague. After over one hundred years, the building underwent much-needed renovations from 2020 to 2025. It will officially open its doors again on 6 – 7 December 2025.
Other sites managed by the Museum of Prague include the Müller and Rothmayer Villas, the House at the Golden Ring located on Old Town Square, the Podskalska Customs House in Výtoni, the Ctěnice Castle Complex, the Norbertov Study and Documentation Centre, and the Clam-Gallas Palace.
Exposition City in time and new technologies
One of the highlights of the main building of the Museum of Prague that will be available after the renovations is Langweil’s model of Prague. In twelve display cases, you can admire this extraordinary work created by Antonín Langweil. He worked on building this model of Prague for eleven years starting in 1826, using paper to craft each street and building in the city. Thanks to his model, we can view the Old Town, Lesser Town, and Prague Castle as they appeared before some significant changes occurred at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The model features over two thousand structures spread across roughly 20 square meters.
The new exhibition offers a captivating journey through various historical periods while incorporating the latest technologies. You will be transported back to the 19th century and other important eras, allowing you to explore the streets and discover the lives of regular people. Experience historic Prague from a bird’s eye perspective, and even converse with Antonín Langweil using AI. In the Live Hall, you will be surrounded by a depiction of the city from all angles, as you find yourself on the opposite banks of the Vltava River and observe the transformation of key locations like Vyšehrad, Čechův most, Prague Castle, and Holešovice. Discover what the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries have contributed to the city and what aspects have endured or been lost over time.
Ceremonial program for the opening of the museum
The inauguration of the Museum of Prague will feature a festive program lasting two whole days, specifically on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December 2025. At the eco-friendly workshop St. Nicholas for the birds, participants can create bird feeders using materials that would typically be thrown away. The art workshop will allow you to craft Christmas decorations, and puppet shows will be followed by an opportunity to engage in puppetry yourself. Throughout the day, face painting will be available, along with a bounce zone specifically for children, surrounded by seating for adults. Expect performances from a theater and a concert as well. On Sunday, December 7, 2025, a book named Mr. Langweil’s Prague will be launched at 10:30 a.m., followed by a guided tour of the Langweil model starting at 11 a.m. Miluláš, along with his sidekicks and mascot Grifo, will also be present for this event. Plus, there will be a stand providing hot drinks to keep everyone warm throughout the celebrations.
