O Saint Nicholas, whose feast day occurs on December 6, is surrounded by many legends and stories. He is often depicted as a saint, guardian, protector, and especially as a kind friend to children. Well-behaved children typically receive gifts, sweet treats, and fruits, while those who might have misbehaved usually get only a bag of coal or a few potatoes. However, even the mischievous kids have a chance to change St. Nicholas’ mind by reciting a nice poem or song and promising to improve by next year.
