Winter Stroll Through the Castle Park in Blatná
The chateau park, covering an area of 42 hectares, is one of the most beautiful spots in Blatná and the area around it. It is open to visitors throughout the entire year. The back part of the park has been maintained in its natural state, featuring the tombs of old gold mines surrounded by ancient trees. The entire park is lined with streams, bridges, and pathways that create lovely avenues. A popular feature of the park is the many spotted woodpeckers, which roam freely and are quite friendly.
The park is home to several centuries-old oak trees. Unfortunately, it has lost one of its most famous trees, Queen Joan’s oak, where she is said to have sat with her future husband, King George of Poděbrady, who was the brother of the local nobleman Mr. Lev. This oak tree was over eight hundred years old and stood thirty meters tall with a diameter of one hundred eighty centimeters, but it finally fell down in the 1980s.
