Rožmitál pod Třemšínem and Fish’s Mass

The Czech Christmas Mass was written by Jakub Jan Ryba (1765-1815) in 1796. This mass wasn’t his only creation; throughout his life, he composed about 1,300 pieces, which included religious and secular works, minuets, dances, arias, pastorelas, and masses. Unfortunately, only some of these works remain known today, which is why he is primarily recognized for this specific Christmas Mass. Known as the Czech Christmas Mass “Hey, Master”, it has become as essential to Czech Christmas celebrations as traditional dishes like fish soup, potato salad, and fried carp.

The enchanting atmosphere of Christmas Eve, along with Ryba’s beautiful music, can truly be appreciated in the very place where his Christmas Mass was likely first performed – the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross located in Rožmital pod Třemšínem, specifically in the area called Old Rožmitál. This church is home to the original organ from the 18th century, which Jakub Jan Ryba played as the local choir director between 1788 and 1815. The Christmas Eve mass begins at 10:00 p.m..

Expedition to the Fish Mound

When visiting, take a moment to visit the Fish Grave. Jakub Jan Ryba is buried in the cemetery next to the church, and his grave is just outside the main gate, positioned to the right by the cemetery wall. If you’re interested in going directly to where Jan Jakub Ryba passed away, you can find this spot southwest of Rožmital in the woods above the village of Voltuš. A cairn honoring Ryba is located there. Throughout the Christmas season, Ryba’s Mass is performed traditionally in concerts across the Czech Republic.
