Celebrate New Year’s Eve 2025: Embrace the New Year with Thoughtfulness and Respect!

Pyrotechnics ban in
Prague

As we approach the turn of 2025/2026, a ban on launching fireworks will be in effect in sensitive areas throughout the city. An amendment to the Pyrotechnics Act took effect on December 1, 2025; however, most of these regulations have been part of the city ordinance for several years. The
fireworks ban primarily applies to the following locations:
  • Monument reservation in the historic center (e.g., Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square)
  • Watercourses and their surroundings (including islands), dams, reservoirs, and weirs within 50 meters from the shore (e.g., Náplavka)
  • Healthcare facilities (e.g., hospitals, nursing homes, and day service centers) within 250 meters
  • Protected areas and nature parks – within 50 meters of their boundaries
  • Areas surrounding ZOO Praha and animal shelters within 250 meters
  • The ban also includes releasing sky lanterns, as they pose fire risks

For detailed information, an interactive map of the ban’s areas, and additional language options (AJ and UA), visit the
City of Prague website.
Penalties for Violation of the Ordinance

The Prague Municipal Police and the Police of Czechia will monitor compliance with these regulations. Violating the rules can be quite expensive:

  • On-the-spot fines: up to CZK 10,000
  • Administrative penalties: up to CZK 100,000

Why Ban Pyrotechnics?

  • To protect birds, wild, and domestic animals from stress and injury.
  • To prevent pollution, as pyrotechnics leave toxic residues in the soil, water, and air.
  • To ensure safety for residents and visitors in Prague.

Pyrotechnics Don’t Belong in Nature Either
The use of fireworks is strictly forbidden in national parks and protected landscape areas. The noise and chemicals can cause irreversible damage to nature and stress animals, leading to panic-related injuries.
Let’s Think About Pets Too
New Year’s Eve can be particularly stressful for dogs and cats. Sudden noises and flashes might lead to panic, escapes, or injuries. This year, Prague has prepared resources and practical advice for pet owners to help make this time as gentle as possible.

The turn of the year can be celebrated in other ways

  • Take a winter trip to the mountains.
  • Visit a castle, chateau, or museum.
  • Enjoy a stroll through historic Prague or the beautiful countryside.
  • Discover lesser-known spots in Czechia, even those off the main tourist paths.
  • Find inspiration on our portal Way out of boredom.

Let’s be considerate – not only to each other but also to the environment. Let’s welcome the New Year with respect for people, animals, and nature.
