Kick Off the Year with Breathtaking Views of the Bohemian Central Mountains

The New Year’s climb isn’t just about competing in sports. It’s mainly about gathering with friends, family, and neighbors to celebrate the start of a fresh year. Every year, on January 1, people from all walks of life come together to greet the New Year by climbing to the top of one of the well-known hills in the Bohemian Central Highlands – Radobýl.This year marks the 61st anniversary of the tradition of climbing to this hill, which stands 399 metres above sea level. The famous poet Karel Hynek Mácha (16.11. 1810 – 6.11. 1836) often visited this hill, where he created his literary works, even on the fateful day of October 23, 1836. He completed his final poem The Journey from Bohemia while noticing a fire in the town below. It’s believed that he may have been drinking while extinguishing contaminated water, which could have led to the illness that tragically caused his early death. We encourage you to visit this beautiful location that captivated the young poet, whose admiration for the scenery ultimately had dire consequences.

The Start of the march is flexible. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., members of the organizing committee will be handing out Memorial Leaves and selling New Year’s Clovers. During this time, you can buy stickers to help support an important cause: marking hiking trails for people with disabilities. The hike to Radobýl is less than 4 km from the Cihelna housing estate. After crossing the railway crossing, you can follow the yellow hiking trail known as the Wine nature trails. Alternatively, you can start from the Žalhostice railway station and follow the same yellow route, which is just 2 km to the summit. From the top, you’ll enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Polabí region and the Bohemian Central Highlands.
