Get Ready for an Extreme Saturday: The Lipno Ice Marathon

Lipno Ice Marathon is a truly remarkable event. It’s not just about being able to run a traditional marathon distance of 42 km; you also need to tackle this challenge in the harsh winter conditions of the Czech Republic, navigating through snow and ice. In the last week, frigid temperatures have set in again, and after a brief thaw, the ice is thickening back up. The organizers have created options for running on both land and ice, as well as a route that combines both. For now, they are hopeful that the race will take place primarily on ice.
There’s no need for concern that a non-icy route will make the race easier—whether it’s icy or not, the course will remain an extremely challenging route along the shores of Lake Lipno. The path will run alongside the shore of Lipno, featuring selected parts that lead inland. The detailed route information will be available shortly before the event starts. Prepare yourself for intense cold and make sure to find your studded boots! Due to the challenges and variety of the terrain, competitors are permitted to veer up to 15 meters to either side of the marker pegs. The suggested route is to follow the marker pegs. The same corridor is applicable for all running and freestyle categories.
Running, kite or “ice” yacht
You can participate in the classic running style, meaning you’ll need to wear winter-appropriate boots and simply start running. Another fun option is the Freestyle, which allows for options like skating, cross-country skiing, kites, yachts, and bicycles. You can choose one mode of transport or mix and match as you prefer. The Freestyle category is perfect for anyone who enjoys activities beyond just running.
The time limit for completing the marathon (42 km) is set at 6 hours from the race’s start, while the half marathon (22 km) has a limit of 5 hours, and the Young Guns (10 km) is capped at 3 hours. The registration fee includes accommodation in your own tent right at the race site. Get ready for a truly exhilarating icy experience reminiscent of what you’d find in Antarctica. The race is scheduled to begin on Saturday, 7 February, at 10:30 a.m. from the beach of Kemp Jestřábí I. located in Černá v Pošumaví. Registering in person is a must to participate in the race at Bike Point – Kemp Jestřábí I. Registration for all tracks and categories will occur from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Although spots for registration are limited, it appears you may be able to sign up on-site for a fee of CZK 1,500.
