Thrilling Dog Sledding Adventure in the Krkonoše Mountains: Join the Ice Ride

Ice RideThe Ice Ride is a race that has taken place since 1986, beginning in the beautiful Krkonoše Mountains. It was named to honor Dr Václav Vojtěch, the first Czech polar explorer. He was known for training polar dogs and was the first Czech person to step onto Antarctica’s icy ground on January 27, 1929. Due to his incredible achievements, he was awarded the prestigious US Congressional Gold Medal, which remains unmatched by any other Czech. His spirit continues to inspire this race, which, unlike standard dog sled competitions, has a slightly expedition-like feel. In this race, not just the musher and their dogs are involved; there is also a skier, who plays a vital role as a part of the team. Many experienced mushers participate, who are known for competing in long-distance races and rank among the best in the world in this sport. In recent years, the event has attracted international attention, drawing competitors from Austria, Germany, Poland, and, this year, Hungary.

Ice Ride MemorialThe key aspect of this race is to follow a planned route that takes teams along the scenic trails of the Krkonoše Mountains. The race is organized into stages for each day, with teams carrying all necessary gear as they travel. They even camp outdoors in tents overnight between stages. The racing trails also run alongside the Krkonoše highways and pass by popular spots that attract many visitors. The biggest event for onlookers will occur on Saturday, February 28 at the start of the race in Pec pod Sněžkou, located near the Javor ski slope. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet the competitors, check out their gear, interact with the dogs, and listen to interesting interviews and stories from select racers.

The first stage (night) will kick off at 6 p.m. in Pec pod Sněžkou, right at the Javor ski slope. The finish line will be at Tetřeví boudy, where the next two stages will also begin and end. On Sunday and Monday , we suggest that spectators try to see the competitors along the ridge of the Krkonoše Mountains. Good viewing spots include Hanapetrova paseka, Liščí cesta, Tetřeví boudy, Hříběcí bouda, and Lesní bouda. Near Pec pod Sněžkou, fans can catch glimpses of mushers with their dogs and skiers at places like Pecká samota, Javorská bouda, Vebrová bouda, or the popular Kolínská bouda.
