Spring on Kamenný vrch in Brno: Pasque flowers open their blossoms

konilkec velkokvětýThe large-flowered pasque flower blooms every year in the Kamenný vrch nature reserve, which is close to the local housing estate. This area is located in Nový Lískovec and covers an area of around 15 hectares. In 1978, it was declared a protected natural monument, and in 1992 it became a nature reserve.

The protection of this site is important due to the rich occurrence of large-flowered pasque flowers. Here, in the Brno nature reserve, the largest number of them in the world grow.

An educational trail also runs through the reserve, which has eight information panels with information about the creation of the reserve and its flora and fauna. Visitors can see many varieties of pasque flowers, from the classic light purple to dark purple and even completely white.

The walk around the blooming pasque flowers takes place on a 230-metre-long footbridge, from which people can admire the rare plants without destroying them with their footsteps. This footbridge is built on stilts and slightly above the ground – it is wheelchair accessible, allowing people in wheelchairs to move around on it. We ask all visitors to be considerate of nature and other people. The Rezekvítek organisation, which is responsible for nature conservation, organises special tours with expert commentary here.

Where do pasque flowers bloom in our country?

koniklecThe pasque flower is a plant that likes warmth. In the wild, it grows mainly in South Moravia, because it likes sunny grassy meadows on limestone bedrock, which is also true of the Kamenný vrch area. To a lesser extent, pasque flowers can also be found in Brno, for example on the Medlánecké kopce hills or Stránská skála rock, as well as in Pálava outside the Moravian capital.

You can also see purple slopes of pasque flowers in the Podyjí National Park, near Havraníky. Pasque flowers usually last 1 to 2 weeks in full bloom, depending on the weather. The reserve is open to everyone. However, ecologists urge all visitors to behave in an environmentally friendly manner.
