The Most Interesting Czech Costume Designers, Set Designers, and Decorators – Discover the Secrets of Entertainment!

The leading expert in the field is Theodor Pištěk, who won an Oscar for his costume designs for the film Amadeus, directed by Miloš Forman. You can also see his costumes in numerous fairy tales, such as Princ a Večernice, Ať žijí duchové!, or Tři oříšky pro Popelku.

Costume, set, and scenery designs were also created by Jiří Winter, commonly known as Neprakta. Among his most well-known works is his involvement in the film pohádka Šíleně smutná princezna. The painter Adolf Born also designed costumes for theater, and in the film Císařův pekař a Pekařův císař by Jana Wericha, you will find costumes designed by Jiří Trnka.
For three decades now, Stáni Šlosserová, a costume designer, stylist, and expert on dress codes and clothing etiquette, has been closely associated with clothing, film, and Hollywood actors. The costumes for the first part of Anděl Páně were designed by Jarmila Konečná, Hana Káclová, Dana Bláhová, and Božena Měchurová. Beatrice Brentnerová, a set decorator, was nominated for an Oscar for her work on the film Nosferatu. Her job was to decorate the film to accurately capture the atmosphere of Europe in 1838. The set decorator profession earned Czech Republic an Oscar nomination back in 2019 when Nora Sopková was nominated for the film Králíček Jojo.
Among the recognized scenographers and costume designers is Andrea Králová. She has been nominated multiple times for the Českého lva, for instance, for the series Devadesátky, to which she added a sense of period authenticity, as well as for the series Já, Mattoni, the films Smetana, Vlastníci, and the fairy tale Čertí brko.
Michaela Horáčková Hořejší, a scenographer and costume designer, collaborates with various Czech and Moravian theaters along with film projects. Not only did she design costumes for the series Bobule or the fairy tales Klíč svatého Petra and O vánoční hvězdě, but she also contributed to the film Franz by Agnieszka Hollandová. Through her costumes, she transforms the typical view of the iconic writer Franz Kafka, choosing the color of the night sky, a deep blue, instead of the expected black for Kafka’s costumes. This dark blue hue accompanies Kafka throughout most of the film.
