One-Day Adventure: Discovering Tábor

Are you currently in the city of Tábor and only have a few hours available? At Kudy z nudy, we’ve gathered some helpful recommendations on where you can go if you find a little extra time. What interesting places can you visit in just one day?

A walk through the center, enjoyable for everyone

Enjoy views from Na Parkánech Street down to the Lužnice River valley, take a leisurely stroll around the Jordán, and consider visiting the botanical gardens, or explore the historic center of Tábor. These are three options you can easily complete within a few hours. While you walk through the town’s preserved area, you’ll come across various attractions that offer even more activities. For example, Tábor Town Hall, located at the main Žižka Square, is not just a stunning late-Gothic structure, but it also houses the Hussite Museum. Running short on time to see all of the exhibits? It’s definitely a good idea to set aside at least an hour to check out the historic underground passages. The route is about half a kilometer long, winding through the cellars of the homes on Žižkov Square. You’ll exit the underground at a different spot than you entered, allowing you to view the town’s landmark—the Church of the Transfiguration—from different perspectives.

Scenic views, parks, and the Chocolate Museum

Would you like to capture some truly stunning photos of Tábor and Žižkov Square? During the peak tourist season, achieving this is quite easy; all you have to do is climb 200 steps up the 75-meter-tall church tower. Squeezing under the bell, which weighs more than 2.5 tonnes, adds a little thrill to the experience. The view from the top may lead you to explore the maze of Tábor’s medieval streets: there, you’ll find many cozy pubs, restaurants, cafés, and ice-cream shops, along with the Chocolate and Marzipan Museum. You can spend as much time there as you’d like.

Not far away, you’ll find Kotnov Castle, which holds another exhibition from the Hussite Museum and features yet another observation tower: this one has ‘only’ 155 steps to climb, but it showcases impressive views of the Lužnice River, the surrounding forests, including the Pintovka Forest Park, and the Klokoty pilgrimage site. It’s easy to reach on foot directly from the center of Tábor along Holečkovy Sady via the Way of the Cross and Klokotská Alley; the round-trip distance on foot is just a little over two kilometers.

Family-friendly activities in Tábor and the sculpture on the school wall

Are you looking for family-friendly tips while in Tábor? You could visit the Lego Museum, which is open year-round, or check out Skřítkov. During busy periods, Housův mlýn or the Haunted Underground are great options as well. You can also visit the zoo, which is accessible by bus or a four-kilometer walk from the town, and if you remember to bring your swimwear, a summer swim in the Jordán is a perfect option.

At the first and oldest reservoir in Central Europe, you’ll find two unique attractions of Tábor. On the northern side of the dam, farther from the historic center, lies the Jordán Waterfall; closer to Tábor’s center, you’ll find a distinctive balancing statue of the famous Czech actor Jiří Hrzán. This actor gained recognition from films like My Dear Aunts and I and Sir, You Are a Widow, was born in Tábor, started his acting career at the local Youth Theatre, and studied at the local grammar school. He had a love for climbing to great heights, a passion that tragically cost him his life in 1980.
